57gold
Am listening to a take of "Gloria's Step" and have to say that I have never heard a piano trio that is so complete, in the pocket, ...just so there. Bill is amazing, but Scott's bass playing wasn't matched in melodicism until Jaco came along and Motian's fills and cymbal work are sublimely laid back. Any jazz piano fans have current favorite trios who follow in their footsteps? Have a bunch of Mehldau, Hersch, Cyrus Chestnut...who am I missing? Tone with Soul Link to comment
Popular Post 57gold
Love "Power of Three", a super group of some of the most musical cats to play jazz. Have shared that recording with friends who were not sure they liked jazz and they became believers. Being a huge fan of Wayne Shorter, who I became aware of in a 1978 performance of Weather Report in a small venue between Boston and NYC sitting on the floor in front of Jaco (one of a handful of music performances that I felt transcended the mortal) and a fan of Jim Hall who I found through Metheny, was introduced to Michel Pettrucciani. Unlike Bill Evans, Michel could play too many notes...but when he was on, his melodicism shone. jiminlogansquare, christian u and Rexp 1 2 Tone with Soul Link to comment
57gold
Holy cow...never heard of NHOP. Just spent a few minutes on web and found him playing Donna Lee on stand up with Joe Pass at a break neck tempo...incredible technique, timing, and he hits the notes that Pass misses. Brilliant, as was Scott, whose melodic playing was groundbreaking. Will have to check out Bobo. Thanks for the multiple heads ups. Tone with Soul Link to comment
