Popular Post The Computer Audiophile
I believe whenever we discuss a topic like this, there should be a basic set of facts from which to proceed. 1. Formats can't be compared in a vacuum. All formats can sound as good as they sound bad. 2. "Good" has different meanings for everyone. 3. "Better" doesn't really mean much. 4. Less distortion, better specifications, etc... have meaning. With this in mind, I think the discussion should be phrased in terms of "how or why is vinyl still relevant, given digital's superiority based on specs?" The answers are probably more boring than many people think. 1. Some vinyl sourced from analog masters sounds better than the CD equivalent for numerous reasons unrelated to the delivery medium. 2. People like to physically touch things. 3. People like to watch something move when listening to audio. The term "audio fireplace" has been used for reel to reel tape machines. 4. Some vinyl sourced from digital files (most vinyl produced today) can only be additive and adds artifacts that people like to hear when listening. 5. There's no accounting for taste.
