Popular Post TubeLover
I caught this documentary today after traveling to the only theater playing it in my metro area(a small "art" theater). For any serious Crosby Stills and Nash, and CSNY fan, this is a must see. I will warn you though, that it is certainly not an uplifting film by any stretch of the imagination. It does provide remarkable insight into the life and career of a great, yet tragically flawed musical artist. The film is extremely well directed, and includes some great pieces of musical performances, photos, and interviews both recent, and going back in time with key people. Although no interviews or recent comments whatsoever by Steve Stills, or Neil Young, and only a few stilted words from Graham Nash, who clearly preferred to say little or nothing. This will not be a surprise to those who know the history. None of them have spoken to him in years. He himself mentions that everyone he ever played with hates him. While I knew of some of his health issues, I did not realize the full extent until he described them in the film. Aside from the liver transplant that he required, years ago, he has also become severely diabetic, and, among other things, has suffered two heart attacks in recent years. He talked at length about how he fears and regrets that he seemingly has so little time left now. This documentary is the last real portrait of a fascinating musical talent who provided so much to the music culture. That it is ultimately sad, and more than a little depressing is something that could not be avoided given his understandable regrets and admissions. He has found at least some element of peace now, but is quickly running out of time to enjoy it.
