Can someone tell me what the difference is between these two drives?

Other than one has the word "Pro" in the name and is 10Mb/Sec faster in read and write, is there any reason at all to not get the cheaper one?

The Pro uses MLC V-NAND, while the Evo uses the inferior TLC V-NAND. This should cause the Evo to have a shorter life span. But I don't think you have to worry in either case. If the prices were close, I'd get the Pro. However, given the significant difference in price per the links, go for the Evo.

Would that cause a problem in a device like say, a Drobo?

The interface is fine; however, in the Drobo specs it mentions 3.5" drives whereas the two drives above are 2.5".  So you may need some kind of cradle to mount the 2.5" drive.

It works with both, no worries. I have one and I know this for a fact.

I've posted this rather unique ongoing study before.  With Samsung you are just deciding which order of magnitude above rated TBW you expect to fulfill.

The important thing to take away for NAS use is the drive specific signs of wear and imminent failure.  This test also goes some ways towards proving you should write the stated memory size at least a few times over (and check S.M.A.R.T.) before putting it into active duty. 

 

With RAM & SSD prices falling after the massive international ruling against Samsung.  I'd hope they get 8 or 10 TB SSD out for the next Windows release and push 500GB as the low end.  100TB (?) max on desktop instead of 12TB would antiquate a lot of server level/NAS equipment and greatly simplify storage of large music collections.
