Adding HDD to diskless NAS (Synology, QNAP, etc.)

semente

Question

Hi,

I've just bought myself a brick...

Found a new old stock WD My Cloud NAS at a nice price and transferred my iTunes libraries with the NAS directly connected to my desktop.

Then I plugged it into my network only to find out that for a few years now these WD NAS can no longer be accessed from Mac OS.

I now have two options: put the WD up for sale (at a loss) or buy a diskless Synology or QNAP and add the WD HDD (also at a loss).

Is it possible to just drag and drop the HDD from the WD NAS to a new one?

Will the new NAS format the HDD?

Thanks,

Ricardo

Plug it into a computer instead and back it up, then allow a new NAS to reformat it.

I'm curious about:

Do they not support NFS or CIFS?

I've tried with afp, cifs, nothing works, even though it can be access from the browser and works perfectly when attached directly to one of the macs.

Lot's of people complaining about this on the wd and apple support websites.

I've just sold it with a 10% loss...
