Popular Post firedog
I like the idea of letting the OP moderate the thread. If no such rules are imposed by the thread starter, then I prefer an organic approach and just let the thread evolve or devolve without moderation (except by Chris when things get too out of hand). I would also like to see Chris putting members on "time out" for a week as an intermediate step to banning if they continually exhibit exceptionally obnoxious or spastic behavior (i.e. opening multiple new threads in a day and responding to their own posts ad nauseam). But as far as I can tell, the OP can't really moderate. Can an OP independently remove any posts he feels are off topic or nasty? Seems like "rules" set by OP's are often ignored, whether the OP likes it or not. Instead, let's take a not too infrequent thread topic as a counter-example. The OP states that he or she is interested in starting up a computer-based audio system, and would like to know (for example) if a Mac Mini is a reasonable starting point. The first responder comes along and categorically states that the sound quality will be vastly inferior to a commercial streaming system, or if one insists upon using a Mac Mini, it is absolutely essential to replace the SMPS with a custom linear power supply, to strip out a bunch of processes from the operating system, etc., in order to get decent sound quality. At no time does this first responder qualify any of this as subjective personal opinion, but simply states that it is the accepted, received, collective wisdom of the community. Is that a fair introduction to Computer Audio? If I then come along and state that there is nothing inherently inferior regarding SMPS in a mac mini, or using an unmodified OS, etc., and that I know of no measurements or tests that substantiate the claim that expensive power supplies or time-consuming and dubious OS modifications will do any good at all, am I the one who is being unreasonable? Many here, including those who would like to see my comments heavily moderated, or perhaps even banished, clearly think so. Do you agree with them? (I've always assumed you don't, but if I am wrong, I will apologize and go away.) Not sure your example is the most relevant one to the discussion. A more relevant one would be the OP who asks about cables, and clearly thinks cables make a difference. He may even state that he wants to only hear cable suggestions, and not to be told how he is wrong about cables. In such an instance, yes, it would not be appropriate for you to jump in and tell him that cables make no difference. He already knows the arguments and has decided what he thinks. He wants cable recommendations. opus101, 4est, BigAlMc and 6 others 6 3 Main listening (small home office): Main setup: Surge protectors +>Isol-8 Mini sub Axis Power Strip/Protection>QuietPC Low Noise Server>Roon (Audiolense DRC)>Stack Audio Link II>Kii Control>Kii Three BXT (on their own electric circuit) >GIK Room Treatments.
