Popular Post firedog
Just got this. Is on Tidal, and available for Download as 24/192. On sale at HDT (with coupon code) and ProStudio Masters. It's good. About what you'd expect from a "practice session/unreleased album" of the classic Coltrane Quartet - I don't think they were capable of playing something you wouldn't want to listen to. The "deluxe" version has a second disc with outtakes - additional versions of some of the same tracks not on the "finished" album. Worth hearing the additional tracks. Not the best album of the quartet, but very good. If you like Coltrane this is a must. SQ is pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but sort of standard quality for such a recording at that time. You can hear everything, but of course the lowest and highest notes aren't recorded as well as they would be now. But a nice "live" sound/ambience. One of the interesting things that was noted in the PR build up to the album, is that the RVG studios didn't have isolation booths back in those days, not long afterwards they were added (as stereo/multi-track recording became more prevalent). So this was basically recorded live with the band all in the one big studio room. Are you talking about the selections with numbers for titles? They are just untitled selections. AFAIK, no correlation. I think it is something like DR9 vs DR12. The hi-res isn't "crushed" or brickwalled - you can see that in software like Audacity. But it does have some volume compression added. Quite bizarre that it made sense to someone to leave the CD alone and add VC to the 24/192. Probably means that there was zero connection between the two and the release versions were done by different people. I 'd say unless you want the bonus tracks - get the CD.
