Ummm... showing that a man is wrong and explaining why are one and the same. What Lewis calls Bulverism is more commonly termed the genetic fallacy. The snippet you quoted is, by itself, quite meaningless.

What C.S. Lewis meant is that is it a logical fallacy to assume that a man is wrong based on who he is  or his motive rather than showing that he is wrong based on the substance of his argument. Ad hominem arguments, which we see too often on this forum, are a good example.

With Electronics, arguments don't always cut it these days. It often takes a personal equipment demonstration to prove someone wrong.

The point was philosophical, Alex, not technical. The same logical fallacy exists regardless of whether the issue relates to an argument or formal proof. Disagreement should be based on substance, not bias.

Allan

What part should philosophical arguments have in evaluation of Audio sound quality ?

You seem to be missing the point, Alex. The advancement of substantive arguments as opposed to resorting to ad hominem ones applies to the evaluation of audio sound quality as much as it applies anywhere else.

No. I am not missing the point. Substantive arguments do not necessarily prove anything with the vast majority of Subjective reports in this forum at least, They are often opinions based on existing technical knowledge which in many cases appears to be either out of date or incomplete, especially in the area of USB Audio.

For the vast majority of the general population, the phrases "Logical Fallacy" and "Ad Hominem don't even exist in their vocabulary ,let alone in regular use !

Thank you for proving that you missed the point entirely. End of discussion, at least from me. :)
