I know Plex does gapless with flac and aac but not mp3. So I assume it was technically tough to solve with their mp3 streaming so now it doesn't exist in the lossless tier either. The trouble with mp3 is that audio is encoded in blocks of 1152 samples. If the file isn't a multiple of this block size, it has to be padded (with silence), and there is now way of knowing how much padding was used. Thus, if each track of an album is encoded separately, gapless playback is impossible. An album could be encoded as a single sequence, but then playing the tracks individually or in a playlist wouldn't come out properly. Later codecs, such as AAC and Vorbis, while also block based, encode the actual number of samples in the final block, making proper gapless playback possible. Lossless codecs by definition do not have this problem. Sonicularity, Hugo9000, The Computer Audiophile and 2 others 3 1 1 Link to comment
