firedog
This one is described as mastered by Gus Skinas from the Sony SACD file. Usually a guarantee of a good remaster. I have the original vinyl and the 30th anninversary CD (I think it came with a sticker touting "20 bit remaster" for the CD), which I always thought sounded good. The DSD remaster is just much better. An added level of clarity, more punch, better bass. Better in every way. If you like this album - get it. The DSD is the version to own. Main listening (small home office): Main setup: Surge protector +>Isol-8 Mini sub Axis Power Strip/Isolation>QuietPC Low Noise Server>Roon (Audiolense DRC)>Stack Audio Link II>Kii Control>Kii Three (on their own electric circuit) >GIK Room Treatments. Secondary Path: Server with Audiolense RC>RPi4 or analog>Cayin iDAC6 MKII (tube mode) (XLR)>Kii Three BXT Bedroom: SBTouch to Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Setup. Living Room/Kitchen: Ropieee (RPi3b+ with touchscreen) + Schiit Modi3E to a pair of Morel Hogtalare. All absolute statements about audio are false Link to comment
oso
That all most sounds like a new mix. Is it close to the LP or the 20bit in sound? or is it a whole different thing. At the site it says; DSD file created by Gus Skinas from the original Sony Super Audio CD cutting masters. Was that a new mix or a remaster? Did you get a chance to compare the DSD from Acoustic Sounds to the PCM 92/24 from PonoMusic? Link to comment
firedog
Very interesting. Did you get a chance to compare the DSD from Acoustic Sounds to the PCM 92/24 from PonoMusic? No, there aren't many albums I would be willing to buy two hi-res versions of, once I have one that I think is a very good sounding one. I don't think it is a remix. When AS writes mastered by Skinas from the SACD, it means they took the existing Sony Corp SACD and ripped it with Skinas using his pro software. If the SACD itself is a remix, I don't know. CatManDo
The original SACD was mastered by Mark Wilder. Not sure if he also did the multichannel remix. Gus Skinas did the SACD authoring (using the mastered digital files to create the disc). I have two SACDs of this album, the original release from 1999 SA-CD.net - Herbie Hancock: Headhunters and a 2007 japan release SA-CD.net - Herbie Hancock: Head Hunters The latter has a different mastering, the sound has more clarity and detail. oso
Thrust, is my favorite Head Hunters album. Which download version would you recommend or is the quality not better than the old cd version? Link to comment
CatManDo
Concerning "Thrust", the 24/96 download (I think there is only one hi-rez version, available from various sites) is much better than the 1998 CD (mastered by Tom Ruff), which sounds a bit thin and more distant. You will not be disappointed by the upgrade. http://www.discogs.com/Herbie-Hancock-Thrust/release/3675149 Thrust Claude Link to comment
