kartracer
I just ordered a Synology 214play with 2x3TB Western Digital Red drives, but I'm wondering at 5400 rpm, are they fast enough to stream let's say a DSD128 file at the same time someone is streaming an HD video? I know the Red drives are rated for continuous use with low heat dissipation, but I don't plan on having the NAS on all the time. I'm guessing it will be powered on maybe 10~20 hours per week. So should I go with a 7200 rpm drive, or should I be ok with the 5400 rpm drives? TIA, Mike Link to comment

JHG
If you want to read more, see this review, esp. the performance charts comparing the Red 5400 RPM drive to a Seagate 7200 RPM drive. Very little difference. This is a link to page 3 of the review: AnandTech | Western Digital Red Review: Are NAS-optimized HDDs Worth the Premium? Jim Link to comment

CatManDo
For parallel streaming of a HD movie and a DSD album, a "slow" WD Green is probably also fast enough. Only if a user is copying files from or to the drive (which means transferring a 90 minute HD movie in just a couple of minutes, i.e. much faster than streaming it) and another user is streaming a file, then it could become problematic. ringenesherre
Synology + WD Red should start getting problems at around 10 simultaneous HD video streams. 1 HD video stream + 1 DSD128 will not stress even older NAS and harddisk models ;-) Home: Apple Macbook Pro 17" --Mini-Toslink--> Cambridge Audio DacMagic --XLR--> 2x Genelec 8020B Work: Apple Macbook Pro 15" --USB--> Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 --1/4\"--> Superlux HD668B / 2x Genelec 6010A Link to comment
