oh, and… modding a U1/U2 Mini to run on external LPS is easy but…

- will void your unit’s warranty

- be aware there’s one wire you *must* cut so… do not do it unless you’re confident enough about soldering it back should you ever want/need to

ok… my U2 has been playing (dac and amplifier off) continuously since it arrived 4 days ago

 

now I just turned everything back on and… I’m still impressed by how big of a difference in resolution, background blackness, bass cleaness it made from my UpTone Audio JS-2 powered U1 Mini 🙂

 

maybe still a very tiny little bit of digititis. *maybe*!!!

 

oh… still connected via ethernet. optical will try tomorrow (if my feck##ng ISP fixes Internet connection, down since last Friday 🤬)

thankfully Lumin app can play local music even without Internet connection as Roon... does not! 🤬🤬🤬

today I’m giving optical a try

 

couple of questions for @wklie:

- SFP+ not supported? (tried a Mikrotik SFP+ “link cable” and it didn’t work)

- Network and Optical Network ports have the same MAC Address, right?

 

very first impression is… some “magic” went amiss 😐

might be the Mikrotik switch I have to use for optical instead of EtherRegen’s “B port” my U2 was connected to on copper

@audiom3 yes, everything runs on regulated LPSs here, switch and router included and… yes: fixed IPs too

 

”impression” is resolution and dynamics still there but… background not as black as previously on copper

on the other end… any suspicion of “digital glare” is now gone: might be one further day of burn-in or optical or… just me. who knows 😛

tried comparing copper to optical today

 

copper chain is: router > copper > Mikrotik switch > optical > EtherRegen's "B port" > copper > Lumin U2

optical chain is: router > copper > Mikrotik switch > optical > Lumin U2

 

Cirrus7 (Roon ROCK) and Qnap HS-251+ NAS are both plugged via copper to EterRegen's "A port" which connects via optical to the Mikrotik switch

 

so... today I couldn't hear any truly meaningful difference 😐

maybe, I say *maybe*, just a very vague *suspicion* that optical has a tiiiiiny edge over copper. again: ***maybe***

 

at this point I'll leave the U2 connected via optical 'till... EtherRegen 2 comes out (... this fall?) then I'll try using it reversed (EtherRegen 1 > copper > EtherRegen 2 > optical> Lumin U2) 🤪

 

 

oh... I forgot: it sounds better with its native app than as Roon endpoint

pity Roon is so much better for... managing one's music collection 😶
