new_media
If I have a suspect FLAC file, what is the best way to verify true 24-bit vs. upcoded 16-bit? Thanks. Link to comment
wgscott
Julf posted on how to do this recently: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f13-audiophile-downloads/when-24-bits-not-24-bits-13901/ Link to comment
new_media
Thanks for the link, and to Julf for the original post. Will check it out in the morning. Link to comment
new_media
Bill, Could I trouble you for a link to the FLAC binary for OSX? Thanks again. Link to comment
new_media
Thanks for the help wgscott and Julf. FLAC returns 0 wasted bits on the file in question, so it's either legit or the distributor is a master of obfuscation, I guess. Link to comment
Boris75
Julf's method is a nice way of detecting 24-bit files that are 16-bit files padded with zeros. I wonder if there is software that could identify 16-bit files to which very low-level random noise has been added to make them look as 24-bit files. I am not an expert in signal processing but what I learned in maths suggests to me that it should be feasible to test if the low-level information is just noise or something else. Link to comment

A question for others, does Sony's Sound Forge 6e software perform this bit check ? The Truth Is Out There Link to comment
Boris75
A question for others, does Sony's Sound Forge 6e software perform this bit check ? It looks like a nice piece of software, but I don't see something that could include this feature in the specs. Link to comment
wgscott
I compiled it with fink and put the debian binary on my server. It sounds like you found a better way... Link to comment
new_media
Thanks Bill. My solution was to use my daughter's PC, but I would still like to have the binary for my Mac. Link to comment
