How To Convert HDtracks FLAC High Resolution Downloads and Add to iTunes (Video with Commentary)

hdflac.pngAs the title says here's a how-to video with commentary explaining the process of converting high resolution FLAC files into AIFF files and adding them to iTunes. This is necessary because Apple's iTunes does not play FLAC files without third party applications. Some computer audiophiles can handle this activity in their sleep while others may not even download high resolution audio for fear of a FLAC attack. Only kidding no such thing exists, but the process is foreign to many Computer Audiophile readers. After watching this video all readers should be able to handle this conversion and library addition without any issues.

(assuming correct connections, etc) but not the iPod. I mean, 24/48 is nothing to sneeze at, just not quite what we are looking for as a full realization of hirez.

Yea, still not working. I switched the Max preferences to AIFF (Apple/SGI), using the "signed 16 bit PCM" encoder setting. My iPod still won't accept them.

I think you are telling me that I can save files on my iPod as 24/48 files. But I don't see how to convert the HDtracks files to 24/48 in Max, with my confusion (i) starting with which file type to use (AIFF didn't work, and neither did AIFF (Apple/SGI)) and then (ii) continuing to how to set the sample rate at 48.

I figure that if I can crack this, I will have convenience and pretty high resolution playback, which isn't bad.

@jferguson iPod maximum resolution is 24/48, but it will downgraded (by the iPod) to 16 bits, then I see no sense to DL in 24 bits if you want your music only for the iPod.

Try to make your conversion from FLAC 24/192 to 16 bits with Max:

AIFF (linear PCM)

Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer.

It will remain as 16/192, and I don't know if the iPod will play or save this resolution.

Good luck,
Roch,

Saving the file down to 16 bits didn't help. The iPod couldn't take the transfer. The error message was "the sample rate is not supported" (the original file was a 24/88.2 FLAC file).

I wonder if the newest version of the iPod would make a difference? Or an iPad?

The convenience of having my music in my iPod/iPad is worth pushing this.

    Hey Jef,

HDtracks does sell in Canada. All you have to do is use paypal when you check out. I live in Ottawa, and buy music from HDtracks all the time. ,,,,
I've heard from a couple readers outside the US who can no longer purchase from HDtracks because of new IP Address restrictions based on location.

Can anyone else confirm this?
If I scratch the idea of using the iPod/iPad to hold/play my high res files, could I use a MacBook (or MacBook Air)? Will the MacBook behave like the iPod, and reject files over 16/44.1, or will it behave like my Mac desktop, and accept the high res files in iTunes?

Alternatively, is there a portable player instead of the iPod that I could use with headphones on the train and/or plug into my DAC for playback through my system?

    Hi Everyone,

I raided RR's HRx selection, and it seems none of the files have any metadata (artist, album, track etc) info in them, so apart from manually doing this, is there a better way via Max / using the filename info?

thanks in advance!
I made a purchase (PayPal as always) yesterday from Brazil with no problems ...

There are some specific albums that I have been unable to purchase due to location restrictions, but only a couple and I don't recall which at the moment - must not have been all that important ...
Hi J - The way I do it is to use dBpoweramp on Windows and use the Tag From Filename feature. This will enter track titles and track numbers easily. Then you can always select all tracks and enter the art and album name as they are the same for all tracks.

indeed that appears to be the case. while trying to register, HDTracks does not accept billing addresses outside the US. Even Paypal does not seem to be accepted. if there is a way around this, I'm open for suggestions.
