I have been streaming iPad Tidal > Wifi > Apple TV optical > DAC. Upgrading to having a Mac connected via USB to Wyred 4 Sound Remedy USB Reclocker > USB to DAC so i can not only stream in better quality but also create a music server. The sonic improvement has been eye opening. I am deciding between using a MAC Mini (2.5 Ghz and 8GB RAM) vs. the latest MacBook Air (1.6 GHZ and 8GB RAM. Pros and Cons from my perspective; its nice to have a new laptop for occasional use and if it gets removed from the server/streaming chain occasionally i can stream using the iPad to Apple TV as before. The Mac Mini has more horsespower a TB drive on board for ripping most of my CDs to and perhaps i would have more apps and processes always turned off on the Mac Mini so a "quieter" computer might sound a bit better. On the other hand as far as storage is concerned a 1TB external drive to augment the MacBook air is pretty darn cheap. Thoughts? Setting up the music server and using the iPad as a remote is also pretty new to me so any recommendations on Remote Control software would be appreciated. Just to get started experimenting using TeamViewer but will probably demo Audirvana for improving sound quality and using their Remote from the App Store.

Using A+ 2.2.5 (without iTunes integration) > Late 2009 MacMini (4GB running Yosemite 10.10.5) w/library on 3TB Lacie Firewire 800 Drive > USB >Schiit Wyrd > USB >Oppo 105D > analog preamp. Just acquired many music files that lack art or some correct basic metadata needed such as ALBUM or ALBUMARTIST. Not that it should matter, but some the subfolders/files are different versions of the same album, e.g. one folder containing 8 files all with metadata ALBUM: The Nightfly (Needledrop MFSL) and another folder containing 8 files with same TITLE for each track but ALBUM: The Nightfly (DVD-A). When I edit ALBUM in Yate and save with all tracks in the folder I get green circle to the left of each track indicating that my changes have been saved. However, A+ doesn't show that I've made any changes and instead combines two different folders' tracks all into one album in album view with duplicates. When I view metadata for each individual track, I see the correct path leading to both versions of the track, but the updated values don't show in the ALBUM or ALBUMARTIST fields. I've tried manually syncing the A+>Preferences>Library> (Sync Folder), closed/reopened A+ but nothing gets the updates to view properly in A+. This trouble started around the time I updated to A+ 2.5.5 , but can't say for sure if that started my issue. FWIW, the MacMini is used only as a music server with Spotlight, etc. defeated, and A+ on "extreme priority", but A+ is slow to respond to typing, saving etc. Apple says can't add any more memory to this macmini(?). Others report okay results w/4GB mem Macs... So any ideas how to resolve my metadata issue, resulting in proper separate albums in A+ ? I am frustrated enough that I am close to bailing out on A+ and trying JRiver or Amarra instead in hopes of spending less time having to mess with everything all the time just to be able to find and play albums from my library. Thanks!

I've spent countless hours trying to configure my 2011 Mac Mini Server to my Rotel HSP-1572 receiver. When the server is connected directly to my HDTV via HDMI, audio works perfect. Whenever it's connected to the receiver there's absolutely no audio. After making sure all the output settings were correct in system preferences and audio midi setup, I read in another forum that a user had to connect an optical cable in addition to HDMI to get it to work. I've tried this as well without any luck. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work either through HDMI or HDMI and optical? The last thing I read was someone buying a Gefen HDMI Detective Plus and connecting this between the server and receiver. Would like input before spending more money. I am a audiophile with no recent purchases and want to bring music to my high end speakers from my computer. I initially thought I would sell my Jadis JPL preamp, keep my musical fidelity amp and my watt puppies, and add a new preamp that had a usb input. I have a PC in my listening room. Auditioned preamps with dac from peachtree and really loved sound of Ayre qb-9 dac but did not like it only had usb connectivity. My other goal is to transfer my 1200 cds in a lossless fashion to either a external hard drive or server. I realize I can get a new laptop(either pc or mac) and leave it on my current equipment rack and have it purely dedicated to audio storage and streaming with mog. I understand both amarra or pure music or j. river software do a nice job but I want to use something that will be fast and accurate for tranfering all my cd or any other files I add to hard drive. Went to apple store they said current mac mini has no optical drive or screen to help with inital setup. They said 13 mac book pro with ssd could come with firewire 800 or even faster with a thunderbolt. They said owc could do a 2TB ext. hard drive that could come configured with ssd with either firewire or thunderbolt compatibility. or a new pc with usb3 or esata could also provide fast tfile transfer. I would love recommendations on what is needed for setup and realize a server by w4s or ps audio may b a easier route. I just dont want to take all the effort to transfer all these cds and not have high quality sound or bad software that makes easy retrieval of music difficult. Finally any dac recommendations in the 3-4k range would be great as my current cd player's dac is over 9 years old and better sound is out there. Did love the Ayre over the peachtree and arcam that I auditioned. Finally if any other advantage exist between mac vs. pc I am very open to either. thnx very much, Nick

Mac Mini Audiophile Server: What's the Best Sound I Can Expect?
sone posted a topic in Music Servers
I built an HTPC/music server/server a few years ago using a mid-2010 Mac Mini and I love it. Elgato's EyeTV and Turbo.264 record and transcode all my tv as 1080p that I can easily stream across the LAN, etvcomskip marks all commercials for automatic skipping, I have an extensive iTunes library that can be streamed to multiple rooms with airplay, and I run my own mail/calendar/address/web/VPN/VNC/LDAP/Profile Manager/file/etc. personal cloud server using Server.app. I've configured it with 8 GB memory (boy do I wish the 2010 models supported 16 GB), and have replaced the original 1/2-TB dual drives with 1 TB drives, all fast. The mini sounds good -- I run a mini-tos audio cable into a very nice dac -- but I've never pushed the audio envelope on the mini because I'm fortunate to have a really good transport that I use for serious, rather than passive listening, which is what I really use the mini for. I'll pop a cd into a Linn player if I want to sit down and listen to it, or a blu-ray into an Oppo if I want to watch a good movie. Otherwise I'll let iTunes (or EyeTV) play or stream and accept the good, but not excellent, audio that comes with these. Though I am happy with the mini's audio -- it's as good as (even better than) I expect it to be -- I'm wondering if it's reasonable to expect any more from it. What would people recommend to improve the audio that comes out of the mini? A few relevant questions: Has anyone configured a mini's audio and achieved what they consider a rival to a decent high-end system? Is there anything to internet rumors that the quality of the mini's digital output was improved in the 2011+ models? Anyone actually listened before and after? Listening experiences on lossless flac or equivalent versus 256 kbps AAC? I created my iTunes library using the cdparanoia ripper and OS X's afconvert command with AAC at 256 kbps. I arrived at this decision by performing my own listening tests on CDs I created by transcoding from WAV->AAC->WAV at various bitrates and confirming that 256 kbps is indeed excellent. On several very nice sounding systems, my fellow enthusiasts and I had difficulty distinguishing the re-transcoded 256 kbps AAC tracks from their originals, though this test is admittedly a little different from decoding AAC on-the-fly. In practice, my iTunes AAC library sounds good, but not really superb like the same track out of a Linn transport. Is there any hope that lossless compression would improve anything? Would using the mini's USB perform any better? I hear good things about Bel Canto's USB-S/PDIF converter. Any experiences pairing this with a mini? I'm sure this is a high-performing unit, but I'm honestly a little skeptical that it could do anything to turn the mini's water into wine, and hesitant about the price of a converter that's the same as the base mini itself. Any direct experiences improving the audio above that provided by toslink on 2010 or later models?-

I am setup on a wireless Mac system consisting of the following: Mac Mini using Snow Leopard; Macbook Pro using Lion; Mac Time Capsule; iPad Mini and iPod Touch. i use iTunes 11 on all. My Mac Mini is being used strictly as a music server and is connected directly to my stereo system. I use my macbook pro as my everyday computer but it also has my iTunes library on it. My music consists of uncompressed CD rips as well as hi-rez files. I have Home Sharing enabled on each computer/device. I like to keep the same library on each computer and looking for the easiest way to do this. Due to some issues I've encountered transferring files (copy and paste) through my home sharing network, I usually rip to each computer separately. This is a major inconvenience. It would be great to have a way of it automatically and wirelessly updating one computer as music files/CD's are added to the other computer much the way iCloud works. When I initially set things up, I had my iTunes library on one computer and copied the whole works over to the other using an ethernet cable connected between computers. This worked well, but I prefer not having to do that each time I add a new CD to my library. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What would provided the highest quality music playback? Wadia 170i dock + iPod Touch to Bryston DAC via digital coax or Mac Mini with Snow Leopard + iTunes/Bit Perfect to Bryston DAC using HiFace 1 USB/SPDIF converter + digital coax cable. Not that it has anything to do with the SQ, but in both cases, control of the devices would be via an iPad with apple remote. I am only interested in using the one that offers better sound, so I'm not interested in all the other things the Mini is capable of unless it improves the SQ. The mini is an intel based dual core, 8 Gig of Ram, 320 Gig HDD. My Touch is a 32 Gig version 4. Most of my music is ripped CD's but I do have some Hi Rez (92 to 192 kHz) music as well. Thanks
