Had been musing about whether to move from PC based stuff for a while... Just before Xmas, decided to improve my bog-standard PC setup by investing in a full HDPlex H5 based system with new Gigabyte board, Paul Pang bits & Jcat USB card, then loaded Windows 2012 Essentials, HQPlayer, Audiophile Optimizer, Roon Server etc - Turned out to be quite a big step up in regards to SQ etc, but..... I must be getting old... what I used to enjoy, the whole tweaking thing, building stuff etc, did not have the same 'fun factor' as I thought it would! Fickle as I am (or must be), I decided last week to go buy an Aurender N100H, and although Roon and even JRiver are a better front end, I am very pleased with it. Indeed, I presume due to its relative simplicity, I found myself using the Aurender more... As far as SQ is concerned, very little if anything in it... but I think the Music Server is a fraction better... Anyhow, so there is a fully built Music Server up for grabs if anyone here wants it + LPS etc ... on fleabay - just search for it.... regards Keith

Hello everybody! 1st of all I have to introduce one of the best solutions all over the world to build your own Music Server - it's a HDPlex H5 computer case and ATX-compatible fantastic PSU which covers all you needs I think. I have to explain some moments before story begins. Some time ago I have used my ordinary home computer to listen my favorite music and setup was: PC with Sotm tX-USBexp USB PCI-E card connected to clock board sCLK-xxxx with Windows 10x64 I have used an hiFace Two - M2Tech (BNC) powered via D.I.Y. adapter from cheap China linear PSU. For that moment my DAC was Schiit Audio Gungnir Multibit and I was enjoyed quality of this setup at all. Than I moved to Audiobyte Hydra converter and plan was to upgrade power for Hydra and Sotm+clock. I have ordered THREE PSU at 2 cases - one 5V/5A for Hydra and second 2-in-1 was 9V/3A+9V/2A.

Just finished the build of my first Audio PC and I wanted to share it here. It consists of: - HDPlex 2nd Generation H5 fanless case - Supermicro X11SAE-M motherboard - Intel XEON E3-1245V5 CPU - 2x8Gb Apacer Industrial DDR4 - 32GB Apacer Industrial SSD - JCAT USB Card FEMTO The system is powered by Uptone JS-2 LPS and runs on Win Server 2012 R2 + AO in Core Mode. Players I use are Infinity Blade, HQ Player and JRiver, with the first one being my favorite. So far, after about ~150 hours of playback I can say that it's a big step up in SQ from the regular PC I used before. The sound is much tighter, more articulate and faster. The imaging has greatly improved, the background is very dark with much better instrument separation and overall a less digital and more natural presentation. I'm posting here a few photos, I hope you enjoy them: Thanks!

In this thread I describe “VerseTransoprt”, a Windows 8.1based DIY Music Server. This is a personal computer that is specifically built to be a music server that can co-exist on the equipment rack in the listening room. It aims to become a reference quality music server for playback of high-resolution and redbook digital music files based on the following requirements: 1. Silent, low heat, no vibrarion 2. Capable of “audiophile” sound 3. Easy to operate remotely (power on/off, music selection, music playback-next / previous / pause / resume / stop) 4. Easy to assemble and install 5. Size and look compatible to the rest hi-fi components on the rack 6. Capable to install a PCIe “audiophile’ class USB card for linking with the DAC 7. Motherboard, CPU, and SATA disks powered by an external linear power supply 8. Play 16, 24 bit /44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192 kHz bitperfect 9. Capable to tweak BIOS and OS for optimal music playback In the attached PDF document I provide extensive information regarding the s/w installation and all the relevant Windows 8.1 tweaks. After applying all the custom tweaks and the relevant JPLAY audio process priority, CPU affinity and hibernation, the music server is almost exclusively dedicated to music playback, esuring minimum latency and jitter. VerseTransport - Computer Based Music Transport - SW Installation Guide.pdf The aim is that the music server not only allows everyone to explore her/his music collection in new ways, bit it also has the potential of delivering better sound than the sound available from CDs i.e. music read from the hard-disk drive potentially sounds better than when read from an optical disc.
