Blu
How about a listing of album downloads by members that you consider to be excellent. As some members have found some downloads purportedly HiRes but subsequently found to be upsampled from 16/44.1. Some are too hot in the higher frequencies, some are over compressed as in the 'loudness wars'. Maybe then if a suggestion from a member can be confirmed by other members, we can give it the CA seal of approval, so members can safely purchase a download knowing it is a genuine HiRes download. I don't have much time at present so I will just list a recent download. "Norskjazz.no" by Karl Seglem, 24/44.1, Linn Records. I know some people will say only 44.1, that's not HiRes, but have a listen, it has good sound stage depth and width, and a natural sound. I think the 24 bit resolution adds to its good sound. eatapc
I'll go first. I think the "Unlimited" version of McCartney 1 (I haven't downloaded 2 at this point) is exactly what we should be praising on this forum. It's the unmucked-with sound of McCartney's mix, no added EQ or dynamic compression. Great job, HD Tracks. Teresa
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Vocalise & Études-Tableaux Eiji Oue, Minnesota Orchestra (Reference Recordings 24/176.4) My absolute favorite so far, this is the one I use to show others how good computer audio can sound. From the HRx data disc. Mathias Landæus Trio: Opening (MA Recordings 24/176.4) Wav files from DVD-Data disc, the best piano-bass-drums jazz recording I have ever heard, I am there. Scary real! Arnold: Overtures Malcolm Arnold, London Philharmonic (Reference Recordings 24/88.2) From Prof. Johnson's modified focused-gap analog reel to reel recorder. Fantastic music and sound quality. Exotic Dances from the Opera Eiji Oue, Minnesota Orchestra (Reference Recordings 24/96) Another great RR download, sounds fantastic although the SACD version to me sounds more analog-like. Sullivan / Sibelius: Shakespeare’s Tempest Michael Stern, Kansas City Symphony (Reference Recordings 24/96) Not a major orchestra but hot damn this recording is fantastic both musically and sonically. Mahler: Symphony No. 6 James Levine, Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO Classics Live 24/88.2) My favorite Mahler recording in my collection, excellent realistic sound. Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé James Levine, Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO Classics Live 24/88.2) Excellent sound, performance of very enjoyable music! Dave's True Story: Sex Without Bodies (Chesky 24/96) Super cool jazz, I also have Unauthorized but this is my favorite Dave's True Story recording. Herbie Mann: Caminho de Casa (Chesky 24/96) Great latin jazz from the flute master and crew, wonderfully realistic atmospheric sound. Será una Noche: La Segunda (MA Recordings 24/176.4) Wav files from DVD-Data disc, very natural and interesting music. Some of my favorite Vinyl rips Dave Grusin: Discovered Again (Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc LP 24/96) Cat Stevens: Tea for the Tillerman (MFSL LP 24/96) The Grateful Dead: American Beauty (MFSL LP 24/96) Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon (MFSL LP 24/96) I have dementia. I save all my posts in a text file I call Forums. I do a search in that file to find out what I said or did in the past. I still love music. Teresa Link to comment

gsquared
Thanks Teresa, I have several of the ones on your list. The Mathias Landæus Trio: Opening, is absolutely amazing! I heard it originally at the 2010 RMAF and I bought it on the spot. It is scary real. Cheers! eatapc
I've been enjoying Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" from HD Tracks. Compares favorably with the original CD from 2000. EQ and compression are similar, but the high-res download sounds more open and spacious -- more texture and detail without brightness. I've also written elsewhere that the Allman Brothers' "Eat a Peach" from HD Tracks is quite good. It doesn't seem to have been mucked up by remastering. In fact, the live tracks sound better than the high-res tracks from the Fillmore East album (taken primarily from the same live recordings).
