Natalie Merchant Video

Recommended Posts

I just saw a new Natalie Merchant video of her singing one of my favorite songs, Motherland. Her voice is so rich on this song.

A couple things came to mind watching this, other than just enjoying the music.

1. Recording in front of a fire, where there wood is actively being disintegrated by fire, is dangerous because any edits or spliced-in 2nd, 3rd, 4th takes will look very strange. Wait, the fire had three logs, now it has one, and now it has three again! I didn't notice this happening in the video, just thought it was a gutsy move to record with this as a possibility.

2. How is she mic'd on this? Is she singing it live? This is certainly a different version of the track than recorded previously, so my guess is that it's live.

I would assume that it's live based on the following description from Blackberry Magazine:

Blackberry Sessions:

Natalie Merchant

January 26, 2023

Natalie Merchant visited Blackberry Farm as part of our annual Americana Music Association weekend. During her stay, she journeyed to Blackberry Mountain. She settled in at the Library and shared a beautiful acoustic version of "Motherland."
