HQplayer limited:Apod

Recommended Posts

Per the manual:

"2.6. Apodization
For PCM source content, HQPlayer can detect need for an apodizing filter. Every time such occasion is detected in source content, the counter is incremented. When such
content is detected, especially with higher counts, use of apodizing filter is recommended. This detection is not absolute, but can be used as guidance to decide when non-apodizing filter shouldn’t be used. There is no harm in using apodizing filter for content that doesn’t need one. But there is harm using non-apodizing filter for
content that would need one."

This has nothing to do with the volume setting.

If you are thinking about the "Limited" indicator, that does involve the volume control settings.

"2.5. Limiting
HQPlayer contains automatic soft-knee limiter that will reduce volume on respective channels when output exceeds 0 dB level. When limiting is triggered, the “Limited”
counter is incremented and volume knob color changes to red. When such happens, it is best to reduce output level and restart processing."

Fabulous.

HQp is a steep learning curve.

Probably sounds a bit dumb but the crosses are confusing?

Does that mean they are apodizing or not?

If the ones with the empty boxes had ticks or what ever it would be self explanatory. Then theres one box with a ‘O’? Couldn’t find a key for that?

The "O" are for the -2s filters which are less demanding on compute resources. They are a mix of the filters so you need to check the filter of interest.

Thanks ericuco.

This seems like it could go on forever! The abyss that is HQp, a nice abyss though : )

I dont know what -2s is?

I dont seem to have any problems with pc resources. So I can basically chuck anything at it.

Its really difficult when your in between learning curves as you may have got the basics but then you don’t quite know enough to understand ‘the next level’ shall we say?

There’s bit of the manual that are a bit over my head and it feels awkward continually asking people what’s what!

-2s filters are two stage, first stage using specified filter is always at least 8x before special second stage filter is applied. If the source rate is high enough that this condition cannot be met, then the second stage is dropped out and only the first stage is applied. For some filters (where stated), first stage is at least 16x instead.

This is totally different from DACs with multi-stage filters, since on DACs the first stages are dropped out as input rate increases. Here last stage is dropped out. This takes more DSP power, but provides much better results.

HQPlayer never employs cheap processes such as S/H, linear interpolation or low order filters that are common inside DACs.
