Mac inbuilt Optical

A quick question...

I was reading in another forum a poster saying that the MacMini (and MacBooks, etc) while supporting 24/96 don't support 24/88.2, though you maybe can select it in the Audio Midi settings. Is this correct?

While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing.

And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism.

issue, isn't it? Isn't there also some speculation in the blogosphere (kind of a dumb phrase I know - there's all sorts of speculation regarding everthing in the world and beyond on teh toobs, but I hope you understand my meaning) that the new OS Snow Leopard release this fall might provide some sort of software configuration upgrade to the Mac's optical out?

This is a good one. Yes, it's a software limitation yes and no because booting Vista on the same Mac will allow sample rates up to 192, but I don't believe Vista natively supports 88.2 or 176.4. Also, pushing higher sample rates above 96 via this built-in interface is not recommended by some engineers as the bandwidth for such music may not work well with this connection. Apple may be limiting this output purposely if they are also in the same camp of nothing over 96k. But, this still doesn't address the 88.2 issue.
