Wish You Were Here 24 bit / 96 kHz

This afternoon I picked up the Wish You Were Here Immersion box set that was released November 8, 2011. The five disc set includes many of the same features as the Dark Side of the Moon Immersion box set.

    Including but not limited to:

Wish You Were Here (2011 Remaster)

Unreleased tracks (Mixed and mastered in 2011)

24 bit / 48 kHz lossy versions of the 5.1 and Quad mixes

24 bit / 48 kHz lossless version of the two channel mix from 1975

24 bit / 96 kHz lossless versions of the two channel, quad, and 5.1 channel mixes

Ripping the Blu-ray Disc was very easy using the same procedure described in my "Dark Side" ripping article. Unfortunately the 24/48 stereo mix on the DVD was not as easy to rip. DVD Audio Extractor has a problem ripping only the stereo tracks using the normal method. I manually selected the largest VOB file on the DVD and was successful ripping the two channel 24/48 mix. This mix will come in handy for iPod/iPad/iPhone use as this is the max sample rate currently supported on such devices.

The sound quality of the 24/96 version is pretty good and lacks the dynamic range compression seen in the 16/44.1 Immersion version. Here are some screenshots of the entire 24/96 album, track four from the 16/44.1 immersion box, and track four from the Shine On box set as well as the Dynamic Range values after a quick analysis.

    A couple quick notes.

Last week I visited the factory where Constellation Audio products are built in California. I saw a couple Hercules amplifiers have way through the build process. The build quality of these 1,000 watt, 275 lbs., $140,000/pair monoblocks is astounding.

I'm excited about this Chris! Your work and writings are superlative, but one person can only do so much. It will be nice to see the additional articles from Writer X (anonymous until December I guess).

And although it's still a few days away, Happy Birthday CA.
Hello Chris,

I am curious to know what piece of software you are using in the screenshot of the Pink Floyd files to provide the file analysis (ie..Dynamic Range, Waveforms..etc)

Thanks

Installed the MOG app into my Squeezebox Touch last night. (Took about a minute.) It works flawlessly. And with the iPhone Squeezebox remote app, life is good!

Since I began using MOG, I have discovered so much new music. This is fun, fun, fun!

The dymanic Range as far as audio is concerned from Sound Forge Help :

The difference between the maximum and minimum signal levels.

It can refer to a musical performance (high-volume vs. low-volume signals) or to electrical equipment (peak level before distortion vs. noise floor).

The 'value' on the end is the measurment in db.

A detailed explanation of ave and rms is found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_mean_square . Depending on the waveform that's analyzed, the rms is difficult to determine as audio is a combination of sine, harmonics, distortions...

Ave is power level calculation purely in electrical terms on sine waves like 50/60Hz :) Easy to apply, for audio..well if only music was sine waves, alas it's not, and thank the stars for that!
