Are "objectivists" unwelcome?

wgscott

Although I have never been called an "objectivist" before posting here, I guess my outlook is more sympathetic to that camp, given that I think it is unlikely the human ear can distinguish unmeasurable differences, and that claims to the contrary require compelling evidence to be taken seriously.

Given some of the stuff I have read recently, I am beginning to wonder whether those with "objectivist" sympathies, i.e., the "flat-earthers," the "close-minded" "malcontents", are seen as the unseemly, uninvited guests, like the atheists at a religious revival?

In short, is the CA site richer or poorer for the presence of such individuals?

Anyone who has observed audiophile forums for a few months should have figured out that the objectivist-subjectivist issue is like politics. The audiophiles at one extreme absolutely think those at the opposite extreme are crazy. Fortunately, unlike politics, the vast majority of audiophiles seem to be somewhere along the continuum between the extremes.

The audiophiles at the two extremes should realize they are never going to persuade those at the opposite extreme. Therefore, their tirades and ridicule degrade the friendly, enjoyable atmosphere of the forum for *everyone* without accomplishing anything in the way of persuasion.

Well said... Except that I sometimes enjoy reading people verbally tearing chunks out of each other. Sure, it makes me feel a little dirty inside, but it reminds me of the good old days when I fought alongside my mate Max in the ColIiseum. "Are youse not entertained?" I cried to the crowd in perfect Latin, and they responded with adulation. Happy memories.

Cannae help but notice that things round here have got a bit tame though. Maybe we all of us need to up our game. When was the last time a newbie was thrown to the lions, for example?

Well, everyone has to aspire to be good at something worthwhile.

CA is richer for the presence of the objectivist, variety in observation and opinion is helpful for all sides of a discussion, as it can assist through stimulating self examination and reflecting on and re-examining our observations in trying to find answers to why. Even better if discussion is done with courtesy and respect. Bill your opinion is valued even if I can hear things you cannot hear.

Enjoy the music, Blu

"I know of no examples where differences cannot be detected by careful measurement, but nonetheless, I can hear them." WG Scott.

I'm not sure if their are measurable differences between WAV files and FLAC or ALAC files of the same music, but I can hear the difference and the WAV version always sounds more realistic, whether it is the extension of the shimmer of the cymbals or the sound of the resin in the interaction between the violin strings and the bow, or the increased space between the instruments playing?
