😊 … for „soundchecks“ I also always put Porcupine Tree in my playlist. Mostly from the „In Absentia“ album (drums are left pretty clean on that) and also the track „Cheating the Polygraph“ from the „Nil Recurring“ EP (because it contains quite some aliasing - unlike other Porcupine Tree albums).
Since you seem to have a connection to this kind of music I‘d also recommend an album called „Rain Tree Crow“ (selftitled). It‘s a live studio session recording from the members of the former „Japan“ band (David Sylvian, Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri, Mick Karn) and as far as transients go this album is definitely one to check out. Appart from being absolutely outstanding musically/creatively. The original Redbook from 1991 is fine, but the 2003 remaster is one of those remasters that actually improve the sound (-balance) IMHO … still very dynamic.

What puzzles me is that on the one hand it's being said the filters are inaudible because they act out of the audible range of humans.

On the other hand the same people talk about "density", "warmth", "transparency" or you name it.

If something appears "warmer" or "denser" than certainly not because the SRC algorithm adds bass or low mids or anything.

It only affects the highest frequency spectrum.

Now, less high end shimmer/definiton (or precisely: less sharp transients) may lead to the perception of more "warmth" or "density" (or what else) because audio is always about balance. But that also means the effect of the SRC filter is audible.

I myself can only hear up to 16k in isolation (some years ago, probably less today). However I can cleary hear differences between SRC filters that act above 20k (in the same phase family). So the "inaudible" argument doesn't fit my experience at all.

Well, I am a fanboy of "as short as possible and only as long as needed" SRC filters due the music I am listening to mostly... so I am probably in the wrong thread here because long / very long filters tend to make everything sound the same to me (HiFi smoothness, less edgy ... especially noticeable with drums/percussion). However, the contradiction of supposedly "inaudible" filters on the one hand and a certain sound representation on the hand remains...

I certainly won't install or otherwise try PGGB.

Way too much hassle to deal with such big files.

Way too expensive for what if offers.

I am totally f*cked up by the "audiophile" marketing blabla and don't want to support such an enterprise.

In addition, as already mentioned, I am mostly interessted in "as short as possibile / only as long as required filters.

I've just chimed in to leave a comment on said contradiction (what I feel as a contradiction to be more precise).

Just for a little claryfication: that was one of the tracks when we talked about headphone crossfeed.

With regard to transients I would choose other tracks. Mainly 44.1kHz files with (not overly processed) acoustic drums.

For hires in general I feel the filter can be even shorter and gentler; I use poly-sinc-hires-lp (aka „mp3/mqa“), respectively poly-sinc-gauss-hires-lp lately.
