Why not Dell laptops?

Recommended Posts

I read on a few sites that Dell laptops are really bad for audio palyback. Does anyone know why? Also what is the best windows based laptop to use?

I've been using an HP laptop for years now with no issues. Gordan at Wavelenght told me the problem with Dell is the USB ports are very unreliable.

If that's too lengthy, this should suffice : http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1380.0

But the latter is just because I hate laptops. They're always slow (think about a 100 times in everything), batteries run empty long before they're supposed to, and when you have a problem, you won't be able to fix it (first link). Well, usually not yourself. This makes you dependend on the supplier/manufacturer, and what will happen to you next ... again, see first link.

Laptops in general tend to have a few problems, not necessarily related to a particular brand.

- Flaky grounding, not all support proper grounding through grounded power socket

- Weak power supplies generating noisy power, almost everything pulling power out of the same power rail

- Poor EMI/RFI shielding between components

- Noisy because all noisy components tightly crammed together in small space

And as Peter already said, almost impossible for end user to fix, because replacing problematic components is practically impossible.

And the nice interconnect - ExpressCard slot, is too rare luxury...

Keyboard layout is always wrong.

Keys are not on standard distance (try that when you're a two finger blind typist).

There will ALWAYS be some keys which don't work properly.

When I'm behind a laptop, wait for some serious cursersy.

For a second or 7.
