Stuff Smith and his Onyx Club Boys: "You'se a Viper", 1936

Lyrics:

So I dreamed about a reefer 5 feet long

A mighty miff, but not too strong

You'll be high but not for long

If you're a viper

I'm the king of everything

I got to be high before I swing

Let the bells ring, ding-dong-ding

If you're a viper

Say, you know you're high

When your throat gets dry

Mmmh, everything is dandy

Ah, yes, you run down to the candy store

Bust your conk on peppermint candy

Then you know your little brown body's sent

You don't give a darn if you don't pay rent

'Cause the sky is high

So am I, yes, yes

Yes, I'm a viper baby now

SOLO

Say, you know you're high,

Yes I know I'm high

'Cause everything is fine and dandy

Yes, goin' down to the candy store

And get me Wrigley's or some peppermint candy

I love it, I love it, yes, baby, but my body's sent

I ain't worried 'bout no rent -- get away from me you hussy, yeah

I'se high, so alive, gonna lay down and relax, oh yeah, oh dear

"Muggles" is the title of a recording by Louis Armstrong and His Orchestra, recorded in Chicago on December 7, 1928. The title refers to the use of the word "muggles" as a slang term for marijuana amongst jazz musicians of the 1920s and 1930s. Armstrong was an enthusiastic user of marijuana, which was legal in most American states at the time.

Documentary footage on Sleep and the story of "Dopesmoker":

"Jerusalem and Dopesmoker are two versions of the third album by the American heavy metal band Sleep. The albums were released in 1999 and 2003 respectively. The music for these albums was written during a four-year period when the group was working on a single song that was around an hour in length. Sleep had signed with London Records, which financed the album. When recording had finished, London Records was unhappy with the finished product and refused to release it. The album was later released in various forms by different record labels. All versions of the album received very positive reception from music critics, who described it as a high-water mark in both the stoner metal and doom metal genres."

Letter of Recommendation: Sleep, ‘Dopesmoker’

"Almost 20 years after it was recorded and rejected by London Records and then made public as unofficial bootlegs or unagreeable edits, stoner-rock legends Sleep's storied one-song, hour-long third album is finally available through a remastered, re-illustrated reissue."
