Nettop HTPC as a good music server?

Recommended Posts

Basic Nettop PC can work well as a music server using a USB attached DAC. Depending on the DAC used, you may find it supported under Linux where MPD would be a good music player to use, or you may need to use Windows 7. Chris' C.A.P.S. is basically just a Nettop (though because it's custom can have internal expansion).

...in my opinion / experience...

While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing.

And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism.

keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out.

Lots of us use netbooks as servers, so it should be no problem. I have a desktop atom server that works fine.

My only recommendation would be to use it only as a music server.

If you have much other stuff running on it you may have problems with "drop outs" or "hiccups" on playback, especially with hi-res files.

Main listening (small home office):

Main setup: Surge protectors +>Isol-8 Mini sub Axis Power Strip/Protection>QuietPC Low Noise Server>Roon (Audiolense DRC)>Stack Audio Link II>Kii Control>Kii Three BXT (on their own electric circuit) >GIK Room Treatments.

Secondary Path: Server with Audiolense RC>RPi4 or analog>Cayin iDAC6 MKII (tube mode) (XLR)>Kii Three BXT

Bedroom: SBTouch to Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Setup.
Living Room/Kitchen: Ropieee (RPi3b+ with touchscreen) + Schiit Modi3E to a pair of Morel Hogtalare.

All absolute statements about audio are false :)
