More correctly, Neil Young opposed CD quality digital music. He championed high resolution digital. What is not needed is a "new format...to come in the future". Regarding the need for high resolution digital, I believe that the majority of members of this forum and the audiophile community do not need convincing. They were convinced long ago. As to the general public, many of whom were weaned on mp3, you are probably correct.
