aivTO
I am new to computer audiophile, and would like some help planning my equipment choices. I am considering the following: Xserve – 2.26GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 series processor, 6 GB memory, 128GB solid state drive, 3 - 1 TB SATA Apple drive modules. ( not sure if I need the internal RAID or not) Lynx AES16e Berkley DAC My reasoning for going this route is I have a Mac network of computers and would like to use the server for business as well as a music server. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. thanks, John Dual 2.3GHz G5 > 8GB ram > OS 10.5.8 > OCZ 60GB SSD + Barracuda ES2 1TB > Pure Music > iTunes > Lynx AES16 > Berkeley Alpha DAC V1 > Quicksilver V4 with KT-150 > Acoustat 6600 & DECCA ribbon tweeters DK30 Link to comment
The Computer Audiophile
Hi aivTO - I strongly advise against an Xserve. They are really loud compared to everything else as they are meant to go into a datacenter. The fans sound like jet engines in a quiet space. In addition I don't recommend using a music server for anything other than serving music. Software does have a sonic effect so I try to keep installed software to a minimum. Lynx and Alpha DAC are a very good combination. Founder of Audiophile Style | My Audio Systems Link to comment
aivTO
Thanks Chris for the steering me away from this set up. I had no idea about the fan noise. I know the solid state drive would not make any noise but did not know about the server itself.
