sphinxsix
For me music comes first but I'm also a movie fan. And a music movie is a territory where the two in one way or another come together. I quite often search IMDB and RottenTomatoes for the stuff I haven't seen yet. Hope this thread can be some inspiration for CA members who are interested in the genre. There are so many great music movies and it's really difficult to choose one or two as the absolutely best so I'll start with titles that simply first come to mind: Milos Forman's 'Amadeus' surely needs no introduction: Not a music movie per se but a classic Godfrey Reggio's documentary in which Philip Glass'music compliments the picture in such an organic way that it's difficult not to mention it: Spike Lee's 'Mo' Better Blues', starring Denzel Washington, soundtrack - Branford Marsalis Quartet ft. Terence Blanchard. Link to comment
sphinxsix
@ TubeLover I agree 'Inside L.D.' isn't one of the best Coen brothers movies. But let's not forget they also created 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' which (being based on Homer's 'Odyssey') was very original and fun to watch IMO. @ Snowmonkey I know the other two, I haven't seen 'This Aint No Mouse Music' and it looks very intriguing. I will have to check it out! Thx! Link to comment
sphinxsix
@ AnotherSpin All memorable pieces.. I do completly agree. How about Gary Oldman's (what a performance!) talking Beethoven and Mozart in 'Leon the Professional'.? Good music accompanying the scene too.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtCqTtAHuDI Link to comment
sphinxsix
@ mansr Sure, I did. I'm a big fan of the Coen brothers. Not the only one I believe. @ AnotherSpin No hijacking IMO. Gotta see 'Meeting Venus', I don't know this one by Szabo. BTW the sound quality of 'Whiplash' soundtrack is really fantastic! As for 'Born to Be Blue' - I watched it last night and in fact it inspired me to start this thread Link to comment
sphinxsix
Angelo Badalamenti has done some good scores for David Lynch and others.A big fan of Lynch too and I agree (again..! ) Badalamenti's soundtracks for his movies are simply great. Well, Lynch was also the one to discover Rammstein, they quite probably owe him their international popularity. Link to comment
sphinxsix
I love the soundtrack to Blade Runner, probably because I love everything about the movie. I agree in 200%! I watched the Director's Cut (this version for the first time) a couple of months ago. It's one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. Just as Philip K. Dick was one of the most visionary writers of the genre IMO. Tarantino and Lynch should get a lifetime achievment Oscar (maybe even Nobel:)) for the way they use music in their movies! sphinxsix
Blade Runner is a good film, but it's far short of the book. That goes for most PKD stories.I believe 'Blade Runner' was the best of them (based on PKD books). Link to comment
sphinxsix
despite being a lifelong science fiction fan I haven't gotten around to reading any of his novels. .What's the reason.? I think I've never met a sci-fi fan who hasn't read a single PKD book or story.. Link to comment
sphinxsix
Blade runner is not really faithful to the book but an excellent film (in the Final Cut). I thought Linklater made a really good stab at A Scanner Darkly (which is one of my favourite books by any author). Sent via Tapatalk Sorry, what I watched recently was 'Blade Runner' Final Cut not the Director's one.BTW obviously the book has its advantages over the movie but there is one element it definitely misses - Rutger Hauer.! sphinxsix
So is the "Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion" speech in the book? Please don't ask me. I read it in the times when I used to read books (not CA posts ) - seems like 100 years ago..mansr says no.. problem solved. Link to comment
sphinxsix
Is there a bar graph showing how long it takes a thread about music to be derailed? Why are we surprised when The Usual suspects dominate the conversation? Geeks were ever thus. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk I do not think about it as of 'derailing'. For me it's expanding. The universe is expanding - if we do not it means that in fact we are ..contracting.. Well, yes - the expanding process sometimes happens through unexpected 'channels'. PK Dick is my favourite sci-fi writer and 'Blade Runner' - IMO definitely one of the most important movies of the genre. So this 'channel' is meaningful for me as it is for some other people here. The movie was mentioned because of the amazing soundtrack. You had a chance to express your thoughts on the thread's subject and put it 'back on the track' (I understand that's what you wanted) - instead you've written a purely negative comment that in fact doesn't bring anything valuable but is just expressing your frustration. You want to change the direction of the thread development - contribute to it. Simple as that. Link to comment
sphinxsix
BTW an absolute must for all 'Blade Runner' fans (as exciting as the movie itself) - a documentary 'Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner' Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner (Video 2007) - IMDb Does anybody remember Milos Forman's 'Hair'.? sphinxsix
Two of my favourite directors are also amazing at mixing music and cinema : Kar-Wai Wong +1 Does music accompanying a love scene (or 2 simultaneous love scenes as in this case) get better than this.? (John Coltrane's 'Tunji' in Spike Lee's 'Mo' Better Blues') Link to comment
sphinxsix
A handful of others I enjoy... Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile Trainspotting +100! sphinxsix
I've just finished watching: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mississippi_grind A fine movie with lots of good blues in it! (and one terrible Eric Satie piano performance but it was supposed to be like that) BTW has this movie been mentioned? I liked it a lot. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ray Link to comment

sphinxsix
@semente Oh, yeah! All three parts are good. And BTW - BBC Planet Earth! It's a documentary. But a great one and with a great soundtack. The first series were from 2006. Planet Earth II is aired now. It's simply fantastic! Just check it out! Link to comment

sphinxsix
Yvonne, an old friend of mine sent me an e-mail some days ago: 'I got no time, could you check out if it's any good? (youtube link)'. She's got interested in neuroscience recently and she knows that if a music documentary is an interesting one I will surely watch it. Well, IMO this one is. If you are interested not only in music/neuroscience but also in such topics as music/maths, physics, medicine etc - I strongly recommend it. Also if you wonder whether being struck by the lightning can make you develop an interest in classical music and even make you start composing or if babies' vocalisations follow harmonic patterns or whether songs of humpback whales in some regards resamble birds songs or which animal has the strongest rhythmic skills (not joking) : I simply recommend it. I found the information about different parts of the brain being specialised in perception of such different aspects of sound and music as timbres, rhythm, low/mid/high frequencies etc very intriguing. Could it be the reason why we like so diverse audio gear.? Or why critical listening (consciously activating its specialised parts.?) is so different from 'just' listening (more relying on the synthesis of information coming from these parts 30ms later).? It's a PBS documentary. It features some well known scientists and musicians - Bobby Mc Ferrin, Yo-Yo Ma, Daniel Barenboim and others. Hope you'll like it too. Thank you Yvonne! sphinxsix
Try the movie Chrystal. I hate that the movie switches between the performance of Red Rocking Chair and another scene. The performance is breathtaking. Good (but dark) movie with some great music. IMDB Chrystal (2004) - IMDb Link to comment
