SOtM smS-200 unveiled at Munich Hi-End

Recommended Posts

Is it too much to ask, or expect even, that when trying to install a new service via Eunhasu that when you click on install for that new service that you get a notice or popup that tells you to uninstall some existing service to provide space for the new service? Or even when you actually go through the install process of another service and it fails because there is not enough storage space that you would receive an error message that explains the issue and how to proceed?

I mean really - that's pretty basic stuff for a company like SoTM to implement.

I'm having trouble removing the NNA from Eunhasu Music Player for my SMS200 Ultra. I've closed HQP and Roon. I've turned off the NAA and clicked "Uninstall" half a dozen times but it's not uninstalling.

SoTM has the following instructions:

Quote

For example for HQplayer NAA feature,

  • Enter to HQplayer NAA config page.
  • Click a Delete/remove button.
  • Once successfully deleted/removed, a install button will be appeared.
  • Click the install button to apply the update.
  • Check the version number and use the feature.

According to my Eunhasu "update" I have the latest version with nothing to update.

NAA is version 4.20

I had no trouble with the Online Upgrade. All worked well and took about 10 mins start to finish. It's too early to comment on SQ.

I had hoped this would also fix the issue I have with HQPlayer NAA - I'm at version 4.20 and have been told there is an update to the NAA but after stopping the app, closing it on my computer, clicking uninstall and seeing "3-2-1 Done" the app is still there and not uninstalled at all. So, I don't get the "Install" button to install the upgrade.

May responded to me about this a week or so ago saying that I should wait as files were being prepared. Any ideas on what I'm doing incorrectly? I've tried multiple uninstalls, rebooting the SMS 200 Ultra, etc.

It's not clear to me what is the issue about exactly, but if you have updated the firmware version to the 0.5.3 please try to install(uninstall and reinstall back) HQPlayer NAA newly and test it out. Thank you.

As I said, I have updated to 5.3. I also have tried multiple times to uninstall the HQP NAA. The uninstall function says it’s working and shows Done. But the NAA is still installed and so I am not able to reinstall the new NAA version.

I updated the firmware without problems. However, when I click Kernel Check it thinks for a while and then displays the REBOOT button, at that time all other choices are no longer clickable. After clicking REBOOT I do not ever get an UPDATE button for the Kernel. And, my Kernel reads:

Current Kernel version : 5.10.20-210.fc32.armv7hl

I've tried this half a dozen times and I get the same result each time.

I do not have any USB drives installed. The device is connected only via an Ethernet cable to the switch and a USB cable to a Chord Qutest DAC.

Perhaps I need to download a new disc image? Where would I find that?

I have a similar issue with the NAA - I uninstall it but never get an Install button. And my NAA version shows as NONE. Though I know it's an older 3.X version.

0.5.4 is not yet available for download but you can download the 0.5.31 image from here (bottom of the page) and then update to 0.5.4

But, what about the Kernel. Will the updated kernel be part of the earlier download?

I reapplied 0.5.4 - not from a disk image - from the Eunhasu control panel. But when doing a Kernel check I still just get a REBOOT option, no an upgrade option. Attempted this change another 5-times. And nothing but REBOOT and the same Kenel version as before.

Plus, no matter how many times I try uninstalling the NAA it never uninstalls and I see this as the version:

HQPlayer Network Audio Adapter

Network Audio Daemon version : false

I downloaded the 0.5.31 img file and applied it to the 32gb PNY micro SD card. No problems.

I booted the SMS200 Ultra with the re-imaged mSD card. No Problems

I updated the firmware to 0.5.4. No problems

I click on Kernel Check and after thinking for 30 sec or so it gives me only the REBOOT option. Rebooting did nothing.

And, a unlike previously where I could not uninstall the NAA to update it... it now shows that I need to install the NAA but it now goes through install, 3,2,1 done but does not install.  Previously, it would not uninstall, now it's uninstalled, but will not install.

Here's the page that I'm getting when if complete the Kernel Check:

Did you tried to click on reboot?

I guess it has to restart to use the new kernel

Of course, every time. Nothing happens It just shows the old kernel version and a kenel check button.

reboot the sMS200 and then try to install kernel again

if it goes well reboot again and try to install NAA

I've rebooted it and tried it again - both kernel update and NAA installed dozens of times now.

I either need a new disk image down load or to try another mSD card again. between 5.1 and 5.3 I had to totally replace the mSD card. The previous card was a 32gb Samsung EVO card, when I replaced it it used the 32gb PNY that folks point to as best for this application.

I couldn't get the Samsung mSD to take the 5.3v disc image, that's why I changed to the PNY mSD.

Yeah, i was thinking of trying both reformating and also maybe trying the Samsung card again, or both.

Since 5.0 this has been an ordeal each time for me. I realize it's not a problem for other folks. I'm not sure why I've started having the issue. I've had the SMS200 followed by the SMS200 Ultra for a long time now.

There are plenty of times I think of getting a new mass market streamer that's less of a hassle.

I went back to the Samsung EVO mSD card. It had 5.1 on it. I inserted it and booted the SoTM device. I went to the Update option in Eunhasu to update to 5.4 - But the system told me it would take 5+ hours. So, instead I powered down and applied the 0.5.31 image to the Samsung card.

That worked a treat. The unit booted to 5.31 and I applied the update via the Control Panel. Once 5.4 was set I did the Kernel Check and it worked. Unlike with the previous mSD card, rather than a spinning wheel for 20-30 seconds it sat there spinning for 4 or 5 min. After a Reboot I did the NAA install again, and instead of 10-sec of spinning install wheel I had 2 to 3 min of install and again a reboot. All seems fine now.

Thinking about this whole thing - I'd say the PNY mSD must have had something corrupt on it. I probably could have simply reformatted it and everything would have worked. But since I got the Samsung EVO mSD to work I won't know.

The NAA is now version 4.4 is that the correct version?? I thought it was at 5.0v???

Thanks for the advice and bearing with me through all of this. As I said, I had issues from 5.1 to 5.3 as well. And, since it's a year or so since that issue I kind of have to learn to recognize what I'm seeing as if it was a new problem all over again.

I've always used my SMS200 Ultra with Roon. Then about a year ago I added HQ Player and liked the result from that.

But, I was reading a review of a ridiculously priced $25,000 streamer in Stereophile and the writer said, he preferred using Squeezelite player and then he mentioned using Squeezelite with Roon. Hello? Something new to try.

It was simple to select LMS/Squeezelite in the Eunhasu and then tell Roon to enable Squeezelite. And, boom, music is playing without any muss or fuss.

This sounds pretty fantastic! I'll spend some time with it, and then go back to HQP and see what I think.

Am I just late to the party... again? Have others here been using Squeeze with their SMS200 Ultra and Roon for a while and I'm slow on the uptake.

I made LMS/Squeezelite active on Eunhasu, Then in Roon went to Settings > Setup and Enabled Squeezebox Support. Then in Audio I disabled the existing audio devices (I was setup to use HQ Player. I had to remove HQ Player Support in Settings).

Squeezebox showed up on the list of Audio devices and I selected it. I gave that audio device a name when doing this.

Basically, you have to disable or turn off all the other devices to select Squeezebox. I named mine SoTM-Qutest.

I suspect, but don't really know the turn off LMS Server means if you are running a LMS Server on your Mac/PC you have to turn that off.

I think I'm getting more bass clarity or just more bass, with Squeezelite. But I'm only on day two and haven't gone back to compare with HQP.

Of course, but it's a huge hassle dual booting or using a VM product for everyday things. Heck, I have Win11 installed on a Parallels VM but I don't use it regularly.

What happens when you play a DSD file in Squeezelite?

I don't have any DSD content - and my DAC the Chord Qutest converts DSD to PCM. So, it's a moot point for me on all counts.

I noticed that there is a newer version of NAA in the firmware now. Previously, I was version 4.4.0 so I uninstalled NAA and reinstalled and it was now at version 4.5.0.

HQ Player's company, Signalyst has version 4.6.0 as the current NAA version.

Whatever, I'm hearing some great sound from my setup. Is it better? Is it different? Who knows? It sounds good. Aural memory is very very short.

Why the card makes such a difference remains a mystery but to my ears (and quite a few other users) it does.

Confirmation bias?

I hate to be a nay sayer, but since the OS is loaded at bootup into memory, how could this be a thing?

Also, how could SoTM expect to sell a product that sounds different with every brand, speed and size of SD card? That doesn't make much sense.

I will agree that many things that make no sense do effect the sound. I'm just not jumping on this train though.

My system simply can't handle 768 PCM playback at the 144mhz setting. Constant breaks and cut outs. I dropped back to the  higher 312Mhz setting and proper playback returned. I had been using the 528Mhz when folks started saying 144Mhz was the way to go.

At 144Mhz the wait for the firmware pages to load was horrid. At 312Mhz it still takes a while but isn't so bad. By the way, at 144Mhz I still had the CPU option showing in my control panel. It just took 4+ mins to load.

As to sound quality... I'll live with 312Mhz for a while and compare it to 528Mhz. I was happy with 528Mhz.

I take it this CPU setting is for the CPU in the SoTM device, why would slower sound better? What's the theory there?

I do have the 6.1.60-211.fc32.armv7hl kernel, but 0.5.51 firmware
