Ayre DSD vs. PCM

Recommended Posts

Are you also in doubt about what is best ? PCM or DSD ?

The HiFi specialists from American Ayre (who know a great deal about streaming, they produce the very, very good QB9 USB DAC) has put music up on their website, so you can simply download it to your computer, and then compare DSD and PCM and what sounds best!

At their website:

http://www.ayre.com/insights_dsdvspcm.htm

you can free and without obligation download three tracks in DSD and PCM format.

Why haven't anybody thought of this before ? I have downloaded and listened, and there is not in doubt. There is a big difference between the different versions! The difference is, unfortunately: the sound level! This means that Ayre doesn´t have adjusted the volume so the tracks sound equally loud. The DSD tracks sounds more clear and defined , which is obvious when they are around 3 dB higher in sound level. This must be corrected, Ayre!

We wonder also that Ella Fitzgerald's Black Coffee is five seconds longer in the PCM version.

Another small overlooked detail is that the three songs have not been fadet out, but are just cut off after approx. one minute. Hard and brutal - and not very musical. We are waiting for a response from Ayre.

Search the Forums, there were at least two threads discussing this, including responses from Charles Hanson of Ayre. At this point, this is very old news.

Yes, I found them too. My search was the word Ayre, there was not much, that's why ;)

Thanks a lot

Anyway, if doing comparisons of i.e. cables, your ears will tell you that cable A is better then cable B if the level of cable A is slightly raised (a trick some years ago for cable salesmen).

And yes, of course you can turn the level down a bit, I just think that should be done already before posting these files, so the user don't have to turn the level up and down, and when he has hit the exact precise level matching the track before the one playing now.... Already then you have lost your concentration enough to not be able to compare things. But this is off course just my opinion (working professionally with sound for more then 25 years now....;)
