jmourik
Bought this album yesterday on hdtracks, 48kHz/24bit. 50 Ways: Kodachrome: What do you think? Jan Link to comment
wgscott
I bought it. I think it is quite good. It seems to be authentic 24 bit. I checked. Link to comment
Julf
What do you think? Slightly strange - as if it had been-low-pass-filtered for 44 kHz despite being recorded in 48. Link to comment

Boris75
I bought it. I think it is quite good. It seems to be authentic 24 bit. I checked. I have the same question as Julf : could you please share with us how you do this? I would like to perform this sort of check on a couple of files. For the moment I just look at the dynamic range, but this just gives me a rough indication, in the sense that if the DR is 9 or 10 (sometimes less alas), it means the benefits of the 24-bit encoding are not used at all. Right - DR gives an indication about the amount of compression used, but doesn't really provide any indication about the actual bit depth of the material. The flac decoder can show cases of totally blatant zero-padding, but can't detect zero-padding if there has been any subsequent filtering, dithering or resampling. Link to comment
jmourik
OK, talking about DR, I guess I should add this: foobar2000 1.1.8 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 log date: 2013-02-03 13:36:47 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: Paul Simon / Live In New York City -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR10 -0.10 dB -11.82 dB 4:22 01-The Obvious Child DR11 -0.17 dB -14.19 dB 4:55 02-Dazzling Blue DR10 -0.39 dB -12.86 dB 4:11 03-50 Ways To Leave Your Lover DR11 -0.10 dB -12.49 dB 5:12 04-So Beautiful Or So What DR11 -0.22 dB -12.38 dB 3:36 05-Mother And Child Reunion DR9 -0.10 dB -10.51 dB 4:03 06-That Was Your Mother DR11 -0.10 dB -13.71 dB 6:00 07-Hearts And Bones DR9 -0.10 dB -10.79 dB 5:56 08-Crazy Love, Vol. II DR11 -0.10 dB -14.28 dB 5:23 09-Slip Slidin' Away DR11 -0.10 dB -13.75 dB 4:37 10-Rewrite DR9 -0.31 dB -10.81 dB 5:00 11-The Boy In The Bubble DR10 -0.30 dB -13.15 dB 4:03 12-The Only Living Boy In New York DR11 -0.45 dB -12.73 dB 4:26 13-The Afterlife DR10 -0.30 dB -12.64 dB 7:25 14-Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes DR9 -0.10 dB -11.25 dB 4:22 15-Gumboots DR13 -0.17 dB -18.05 dB 4:34 16-The Sound Of Silence DR10 -0.10 dB -11.47 dB 3:06 17-Kodachrome DR9 -0.10 dB -10.63 dB 3:37 18-Gone At Last DR9 -0.10 dB -10.93 dB 4:31 19-Late In The Evening DR11 -0.39 dB -14.84 dB 4:03 20-Still Crazy After All These Years -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 20 Official DR value: DR10 Link to comment
jmourik
Another note about dynamic range. Check out this album from 1981. wgscott
How? Your fbits shell script. Link to comment
Julf
Your fbits shell script. Ah, OK. The problem with that is that it only detects "first hand" zero-padding - any filtering, dithering or resampling hides the evidence. If it tells you something is 16 bit, then it definitely is 16 bit and not 24 bit, but if it tells you something is 24 bit, it might or might not be for real. Link to comment
wgscott
I understand. I should have said "it is consistent with the 24 bit claim". It is one of the few risks I have taken with HDtracks in the last year. BTW I never heard a thing from Bowers and Wilkins about those 16 bit padded downloads. Link to comment
