Musicophile
Digging through Qobuz Hires Downloads I found another gem, with amazing value for money: Philippe Jaroussky: Caldara in Vienna. €7.49 for 24/44. Philippe Jaroussky is without doubt one of the best male baroque singers we have these days. On this album he sings Castrato arias from the rather unknown Italian composer Antonio Caldara. The Concerto Köln is lead by Emanuelle Haim, a former William Christie Protégé that is a very reliable source for excellent baroque vocal recordings (e.g. her Händel Il Trionfo del Tempo with Nathalie Dessay is great as well). This is an absolute listening pleasure: Very good sound quality (though not up to the levels of top audiophile labels like Linn), Jaroussky amazing contralto singing and the simple, but elegant music played with great passion from the Concerto Köln. wdw
Have this one on CD and agree with your recommendation....great music. Too bad about the Castrato thing, though... ;-) Caldara, Scarlatti, Pergolesi ... wonderful era for lyrical music Link to comment
