Pure i20 volume control via optical out

Hello

 

I purchased a Pure Digital i20 that extracts a digital signal to output to an external DAC, currently in use with a Teac A-H01. The two are linked via an optical cable.

 

I recently began to use the Pure remote as I noticed it had a volume control. Well this led to a little confusion on my part, what volume should I set the iPhone to using the said remote? I am even surprised that there is a volume setting as the audio out is simply a digital signal.

 

I am contemplating using the ipod instead of streaming from the mac to an express linked to optical.

 

Any insight on the volume question would really help clear up some confusion. Thanks

 

PS, If you are wondering, this setup with Dali Zensor 1 is simply charming and delight to listen to.
