ds676
Hi, I am totally novice when it comes to computers - here you are dully warned! I am moving to a new apartment and would like to move to a wireless music system. I am considering buying Sonos for that matter. My question: I would like to have a device that will serve as a backup for my music files and as the source from which Sonos could read music. I don't want to rely on any computer. I want to be able to download the music from my PC to that device and that's it. Which device could work for me here? I heard about Drobo. Would it work well? Is there a cheaper solution? If I understand correctly, for Drobo I'll need to buy the Drobo ($399) + several hard memory drives to install in it. Is that the case? I would like, ideally not to spend more than $400 on the entire "device". I want something simple. Any suggestions in clear language will be highly appreciated! Many thanks, David Link to comment
wappinghigh
Hi David. Sonos will scan and use a NAS as the music library source. So the NAS can be left on, and the computer turned off. However, you need at least one PC/Mac to set up and use Sonos in the first place. (your first "Zone") As for which NAS to buy, there is heaps of advice on this on the Sonos Forums Cheers Wap New simplified setup: STEREO- Primary listening Area: Cullen Circuits Mod ZP90> Benchmark DAC1>RotelRKB250 Power amp>KEF Q Series. Secondary listening areas: 1/ QNAP 119P II(running MinimServer)>UPnP>Linn Majik DSI>Linn Majik 140's. 2/ (Source awaiting)>Invicta DAC>RotelRKB2100 Power amp>Rega's. Tertiary multiroom areas: Same QNAP>SMB>Sonos>Various. MULTICHANNEL- MacMini>A+(Standalone mode)>Exasound e28 >5.1 analog out>Yamaha Avantage Receiver>Pre-outs>Linn Chakra power amps>Linn Katan front and sides. Linn Trikan Centre. wattsup
Actually you do not need a PC/Mac to set up Sonos. One can do it with a Sonos Controller, an iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad or Android running the Sonos APP. For instance, if an iPod Touch is used, the email capabilities of this device combined with the menu functionality of the app would allow a full-blown set up to take place. Link to comment
