MarkS
I am a windows person; however, based on this forum, I bought a Mac mini today. I bought the highest spec one made, but Apple did not offer ssd or 8gb of ram, and I could swear that several forum members have that setup. What am I missing? Thanks. - Mark Synology DS916+ > SoTM dCBL-CAT7 > Netgear switch > SoTM dCBL-CAT7 > dCS Vivaldi Upsampler (Nordost Valhalla 2 power cord) > Nordost Valhalla 2 Dual 110 Ohm AES/EBU > dCS Vivaldi DAC (David Elrod Statement Gold power cord) > Nordost Valhalla 2 xlr > Absolare Passion preamp (Nordost Valhalla 2 power cord) > Nordost Valhalla 2 xlr > VTL MB-450 III (Shunyata King Cobra CX power cords) > Nordost Valhalla 2 speaker > Kaiser Kaewero Classic /JL Audio F110 (Wireworld Platinum power cord). cscuzzo
According to Apple specs, the Mini supports up to 4GB RAM. To add SSD, you'll have to do it on your own. There are lots of videos on DIY disk upgrades for the Mini on YouTube, which are great if you're not familiar with the process. There are many SSD devices out there, with varying prices and speed. I've had great luck with the Mac version of OCZ Vertex. It's great to see it boot with only about 1.75 spins of the "wheel" at bootup. Link to comment
MarkS
Thanks. That makes sense. Regarding the ssd, I installed a vertex drive into my windows 7 machine. Nice drive. I will probably get the120 GB model as all my "stuff" is on a nas. Looks like a project for next weekend. MarkS
I found a place that will put in an IBM X25 80 gb drive and add 8gb of ram into the mini for $750. Not bad. Can someone please advise me regarding the current usb specs. Am I correct that the mac mini's usb can output 24/196? I think my dac is currently limited to 24/96, but that is a dac issue not a "computer" issue right? - Mark Synology DS916+ > SoTM dCBL-CAT7 > Netgear switch > SoTM dCBL-CAT7 > dCS Vivaldi Upsampler (Nordost Valhalla 2 power cord) > Nordost Valhalla 2 Dual 110 Ohm AES/EBU > dCS Vivaldi DAC (David Elrod Statement Gold power cord) > Nordost Valhalla 2 xlr > Absolare Passion preamp (Nordost Valhalla 2 power cord) > Nordost Valhalla 2 xlr > VTL MB-450 III (Shunyata King Cobra CX power cords) > Nordost Valhalla 2 speaker > Kaiser Kaewero Classic /JL Audio F110 (Wireworld Platinum power cord). Audio_ELF
You are correct that the USB port in a MacMini (or any computer with a USB2.0 port) is quite capable of 24/192 transfer, but that most DACs are limited to 24/96 or even 16/48.
