I tried this file replacement--macOS complained that the file was 'installed incorrectly' and I found I now had NO audio devices. Rebooting did nothing. Hmm.

Time Machine put things back as they were, but it's a tricky issue.

you just can't only replace the file... yes it is tricky, but working...

Here is the recipy i wrote for easy following... ALL steps must be done...

And yes it can mess your Os if you don't do it right... so, BACK UP before.

This was posted on another thread, many succeeded, like myself.

I have found a method to enable Direct Mode again... on A+ forum...

I edited it a bit for more easier doing it...

i included in the .ZIP the Read Me file, the .ktext of El Capitan and the Sierra one just in case.

I just did it myself, it is not long maybe 15 mins... Having a backup done if you don't have one is longer :-)

It worked for me, now Direct Mode is on and no bug in A+... i'm already on 10.12.2...

I wrote everything to be easy for not computer people to do it...

It weights nothing... download it and read it first, than see if you are not worry :-)

In my dropbox: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...DirectMode.zip

AT YOUR OWN RISK...

you will have to redone it if you upgrade...

Suppose I shouldn't have tried this procedure...too much a novice....my system crashed completely and had to do a Time Machine restore...that went fine but a few days later the MacBook is showing the same crash behaviour. Is this malware?

I assume that restoring to a time earlier than the attempted exercise the issue was closed and the corruption file no longer in the system but apparently not.

Also discover that restoring from a NAS is it's own world of pain...Time Machine sees the NAS but won't accept the login name and password. Google search tells me this is a vey common problem with most suggesting that NAS Drives will not be readable from the COMMAND-R Restore window. Anyone have any success with login into a NAS from this window?

For sure it is not a malware... it is still working with 10.12.4, many have installed it with no problem, and i have direct Mode on with A+ v3... you surely didn't follow it exactly or done all that was written... you can check also on audirvana forum that others there installed it without problem... Sorry for you.

Since DropBox change is settings the link doesn't work since yesterday, here is the new one for those who wants it:

That one could corrupt an operating system by replacing kernel extensions suggested to me that the tweaks were not worth it. I reverted to El Capitan, which is just fine for a 2010 Mac Mini I use as a music player.

On the other hand, I got a Bryston BDA-3 that supports upsampling to DSD128. The improvement is not minor  (though not inexpensive). The Mini has to work hard to process the file, maxing out CPU, but it's faster than the playing so no hiccups. I plan to toggle direct mode on and off and see if I can tell a difference.

I can't seem to get AU units to work though; nothing happens. Which is too bad, I like being able to notch the room peaks.

Direct Mode in Sierra enable won't change the fact that upsampling to DSD128 will reduce the CPU load with A+. Damien can optimize the processes or mansr with his filters maybe. Your izotope settings can give more CPU load and others less... you can always watch what happen in Activity Monitor window.

i was just about posting a new edited text version to be more clearly for people not to sure about playing with this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ex3ksuj1calu7p6/AudirvanaSierraDirectMode.zip?dl=0

There is nothing in that .zip file that can harm if you not trusting these just use the Text file for reading

and use the .ktext from your computer.

If it just changes 1% for the better why not if people want...

Even if i write at 36 points the typo... if someone don't follow, i can't do much about this...

There is more risk playing with Flash Player than that i think.  :-)

Again, all is good with the release macOS Sierra 10.12.4

That is why you can replace the one in Sierra by the one you own (in your El Capitan system) if you don't trust :)

This is the error message I received when I tried to copy the El Capitan kext file into the extensions folder:

"The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOAudioFamily.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."

Did you follow the recipy and done the repair permission with onyx after? Most important thing to do... itis still working with beta high sierra, so must be on your side ?

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I followed it exactly, but I couldn't repair with Onyx because Onyx no longer has the option to repair permissions in their latest version (which is the only one available from their site). So, I used CleanMyMac 3 to repair the permissions. I am confused because I was able to get it to work once before. Is the prompt to replace the kernel normal?

Yes because there is one already in there...

Makes sense, I just didn't remember that prompt last time, so I wanted to double check. Any ideas on how to use Onyx to repair permissions now that they've (Onyx) removed that function?

I was already with 10.13.1 and applied the security update already with 3.1.8 Direct Mode On. Still on.

The three prefs are on and working, but i didn't installed .ktext since security update, waiting for 10.13.2

Unchecking Exclusive Access remove Integer Mode and Integer options.

Unchecking Direct Mode remove option of Integer Mode 1 and 2, but Integer Mode still on.

Unchecking Integer Mode just remove that and its options 1 and 2

Same here. But I don't understand why DM must be ON in order to have IM options? Could somebody explain, please? Thanks.

I might be saying wrong, just guessing...

maybe when Direct Mode not choose, you are on your DAC (driver) integer Mode only, so maybe this why no choice for 1 or 2 provided by A+

Thanks, where do I put the  IOAudioFamily.kext file?

I'm just going to go as far as El Capitan not Sierra but in any case if I did upgrade to Sierra do I need to do this for each and every upgrade to Sierra?

You don't need that for El Capitan.

If you upgrade to Sierra or High Sierra and want absolutely Direct Mode On, you'll need to read the text file.

NO... you do nothing.

Direct Mode in El Capitan is OK...

trash the .ktext and the text file, you don't need it.

Well I remember for the longest time Direct Mode with El Capitan was causing A+ problems. I watch the Forum closely and never seen a post saying Direct Mode is now ok in El Capitan. I just hate using very old OS's like Yosemite.

Some have troubles with their DAC, but not fault of Direct Mode in A+.

You just have to install 10.11.6 and A+, and Direct Mode will be their like in Yosemite nothing change...

after 10.11.6 it will not be in the options of A+... you will have to trick your computer, so stay at 10.11.6 for the moment  :)

What kind of faults are they having and what to look out for?

I don't know, maybe DAC need new driver ??, mine has no driver so no trouble :)

if it works with Yosemite, it should be the same with El Capitan...

Back up Yosemite system before then if something happen you revert back.

just install 10.11.6, plug your DAC and continu enjoying A+ with Direct Mode  :)

Appreciate the quick reply RHS..and great that it's working in Mojave. Have you tested it in the latest High Sierra (10.13.6) by any chance?

Mmm, can't really be sure if i latest tested with 10.13.5 or last 10.13.6, but if it is still going well with 10.14 and 10.14.1, i can't see why it will not work with 10.13.6, but with Apple, anything could happen... just upgrade to Mojave :)

Not to my knowledge. It stop at half of Catalina if i remember, then, i think, Apple change something in the security of that music .ktext and i stopped using it (i never heard a real difference anyway on my system). Someone said he succeeded with Big Sur on Audirvana Forum, but never answered questions after :)
