HQ Player

GREAT catch! It seems the Tools options changes based on what is selected in Settings Backend. Selecting NAA shows the Network Naming option under Tools.

That did the trick! Thank you...I also rebooted my DAC and now HQPlayer "sees" the Pi2. Although I still don't have sound at DSD256. Does NAA support DSD256 in "non-DoP" mode? Thanks everyone!

Are you using "Auto rate family" feature? That has the benefit that the initialization is faster than for the cases where conversion goes between rate families. Of course this also depends on the DAC/driver too, so it may not be possible.

Hi, trying to use auto rate family setting to speed up initialization using the new extreme filters, but when I check that, i get no sound at all (after waiting over 5 minutes...there is also no initialization progress bar on the screen). I am trying to go from 192 pcm to DSD256 using AMSDM7 512+fs. My DAC is an Auralic Vega. It works and sounds great if I don't check off Auto Rate Family, but initialization takes over 2 minutes on my 6700k.

Will checking Auto Rate Family speed up initialization in my case and if so, how can I get it to work?

Also, out of curiosity, if I overclock my pc, say by changing the BCLK from 100 to 110, will that mess up the timing in HQPlayer (eg, will songs play 10% faster)?

thanks you.

Theoretically yes, however that would multiply the RAM usage and wouldn't even work for the 32-bit binary because it would run out of the address space. But that is possibility in future when most people start having 16 - 32 GB of RAM.

I would say material for 4.x series.

I hope so! Memory is cheap...time is precious. ;)

Hi, I'm looking to see if server 2016 in Core mode with Audiophile Optimizer will be an improvement over my windows 10 pc.  Does anyone know if HQPlayer will run in server 2016 Core mode?  It appears Roon Core can run in Core mode and so I wanted to made sure HQPlayer will as well before I make the leap.  Currently, I run Room Core streaming to HQPlayer on Windows 10.  For me, HQPlayer is a must.

Thanks, Hammer.

This is very useful, thank you. No, I'm not planning to do convolution for now. I intend to install an i7-7700 (not the K, just standard) which will probably give me lower load figures than yours. 75% sounds too much constant load. Which case do you use? Do every have overheating problems?

It probably also depends on what filters you use.  I have a i7 7700k and it's  not able to use the xtr filters even with CUDA offload (GTX 980) if the source is DSD.  However, the -2s variant works fine.  My load is generally around 20-25% (I also run Roon Core on this machine) and heat is not an issue in my HDPlex H5 case - although I do leave the lid off given the 980 gives off a lot of heat.  With the lid off, the fan on the 980 barely spins.

One benefit of the k processor if you use Roon is that you can RDP into the machine and run the Roon front end.  Nvidia drivers do not support OpenGL via RDP, but the intel drivers do and Roon front end requires OpenGL.  (assuming you are running Windows).

I'm investigating this...

I think I am having the same issue.  I use Roon and it will only play one song at a time.  The song will stop 1 or 2 seconds before the end and it will not move onto the next track.  At that point, I can select another track to play and I can do this once or twice, but after that, selecting another track will not play.  If I then quit HQPlayer, and start it up again, it says it cannot open my audio device.  On my Auralic Vega, I need to switch the input to say Coax and switch back to USB before I can start HQPlayer again.

I am using the latest 3.16.3 version on Windows 10 CU with the most recent updates.  I hesitate to uninstall any of the updates given the news on the ransomware...

Thanks for looking into this!

Upon further testing, it appears this only happens with some songs and not all. It appears redbook files are fine, but I have found a DSF and a 88/24 file that stops before the end.  Note both of these are in my play everyday playlist and this phenomenon did not occur until the most recent Windows update were installed and I installed 3.16.3.  The Roon server version has not changed.

Thanks.

Hi, I’m trying to use HQPlayer on a new AMD Threadripper 16 core system and when I play, the initialization progress bar flashes and there is no sound...I have multicore DSP selected.  I was hoping I can use this new system instead of my old Intel 6600k CPU with a 980 GTX.  Thanks.

Can you send me a log file over email? Likely some setting is not correct...

Sure, where can I find the log?  Upon further investigation, it might be because I am trying to stream output to NAA.  Can you tell me what ports need to be open to do that?  Note, HQPlayer sees the NAA, but I am unable to stream to it.  Thanks!

If you have enabled it in the settings and then restarted HQPlayer, it is in %LOCALAPPDATA%\HQPlayer folder.

You can also check the trace from NAA side if there are any errors...

NAA port usage is dynamic, so there are no specific ports.

Thanks.  I found the problem.  I had convolution set to on, but the REW file’s were not in the right location.  Once I moved the files to where HQPlayer were look, it works.  Unfortunately, upsampling to DSD256 stutters...back to old system!

Quite strange with such CPU. Are you using ASIO backend? Do you have the same buffer settings on both machines in the ASIO driver control panel? Same buffer setting at HQPlayer side?

I am using ASIO on the machine with NAA running.  This machine (a 6600k PC running Windows 10) is connected to a Vega DAC.   In the ASIO control panel, USB streaming mode is Reliable and buffer is set to Auto.

On the Threadripper (64 GB RAM) machine running HQPlayer, buffer in HQPlayer is set to 250 ms.

Is is there a set of settings I should try?  The two machines are connected using Cat6 running 1Gbps.

Thanks.

Hi, I using the x64 NAA 3.5.2 image and so happy it worked on first boot.  I can stream to my Vega DAC and it sounds great.  Only issue is while PCM work, I cannot select SDM output on HQPlayer.  Anything I can do to fix this?

Interesting that the Raspberry Pi image works to output SDM, but my Pi2 is not powerful enough for DSD256 and I was hoping this i5 can handle it, but I can’t select SDM!

 Thanks!  Hammer

I just uploaded new x64 image, please redownload and check if the new one works...

Hi, just tried the new image and although I can now select SDM on HQPlayer, when I do, no sound comes out.  Usually, when the Vega detects the USB input, it displays the format.  When I select SDM, that is blank which, I think, means the format is not recognizable or not detected.  When I switch to PCM, it all works again.

sometimes when I try SDM, HQPlayer freezes and I have to close it via task manager.

Thanks for your help.  Hammer

Did you check what sampling rate you are sending? Some DAC's don't like 48k-base DSD rates. For example Marantz HD-DAC1 goes on mute in such cases, although technically there's no reason for doing so.  While the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital works on both rate families just fine, the display doesn't indicate anything when using 48k-base DSD rates.

So I would recommend trying to select 44.1k x256 as output rate from HQPlayer.

Hi, just tried 44.1 x256 and having the same issue with the x64 NAA image.  I should note the 48k x256 works with the Vega 1) directly from HQPlayer, 2) via NAA running in Windows, and 3) NAA using the Pi image (except my Pi2 stutters).  Any other ideas?  Thank you!

If it’s helpful, here is the log from the Windows NAA connected to the Vega DAC

In this case it is certainly not going to do 48k x256, because the driver doesn't support such. So it is doing 44.1k x256 here.

What is your filter setting and source file format? What does HQPlayer show at "Format" line when you start playback with the x64 NAA image?

I was able to get it to work by re-imaging my USB key, shut everything down, includzing the DAC and restart everything.  Thanks for your help.  I must have been something on my end.  Thank you again.

Thanks...I'll investigate some more.  Looking at task manager, it appears HQPlayer listens to port TCP 4321.  I'll check if opening that solves the problem and report back.

That did the trick!  Have HQPlayer running on a 16 Core threadripper system and upsampling to DSD256.  Noticing that even with 16 physical cores available, only 6 is being used by HQPlayer.  Is there a cap on how many it will use?

HQPlayer and priority in Windows.

Hi, I recall reading on this thread sometime ago that one should not set the priority level for HQPlayer in Windows because the only impact that would have is on the GUI and not the signal processing give HQPlayer manages that internally.

I am running HQPlayer on a Server 2016 system with a GTX 1080 for CUDA offload.  What I find is that the music will pause every so often, but as soon as I RDP into the system to see what is happening, the music starts up again.  Therefore it appears Windows is suspending HQPlayer.  The system has 64 GB of RAM, a 16 Core Threadripper, the GTX 1080 and not running anything in the background and so I think it is not a resource issue.

Has anyone experience this and if setting priority does not help, are there any workarounds to get HQPlayer “running” all the time?

Thanks, Hammer
