LUMIN - Audiophile Network Music Player

Recommended Posts

Hello to you all.

I started experimenting with MQA playback via Roon and have a question about the format shown in the display of my S1. I use some L2 files that I put on my NAS for evaluation. When I playing these flies through minimserver the Lumïn display shows MQA playaback. But when I play te same files via Roon I only see the original 44.1 kHz 16 bit format displayed

In the earlier posts on the MQA functionality (this is a good moment to commend Lumïn for how they maintains their software and provide us with new choices in functionality) I can't find any mention of what the display should show when playing via Roon and I would love to get some reassurance that my Roon settings are right.

Wow wklie,

That's fast, thanks! It is good to know that the display should show MQA, also when playing via Roon. I am sure that I have the Lumïn set up as a RAAT. I also have the latest version of Roon, so I will have to check the settings of Roon.

Hi wklie,

With your help I determined the problem. One of the L2 sample files plays back as a standard Flac file through Roon though it is labeled as an MQA file. The other MQA sample files I downloaded play as MQA through ROON.

I can't find the reason for this behavior (the same file plays back as MQA through minimserver), but it is not a big issue so I won't burden this thread any longer.

Thanks!

Hi wklie,

I found what I had to do. The standard CD quality album has been mislabeled as MQA. because of this ROON hid the real MQA file as a duplicate. After I turned on the "show hidden albums" option in the ROON preferences the real MQA file became visible :)

This was a known issue with Roon Build 242.  However, Build 247 claims to have fixed it...

If this CD was added when you were running Build 242, when you upgrade to Build 247 Roon will need time to re-analyze the music it previously determined to be MQA.

If you added this CD after running Build 247, then this may be another bug.

Hi wklie,

I imported the L2 files yesterday using Build 247. I suspect the problem lies in the specific L2 file. As you can see on the pic I added of the Roon screen during playback you can see that the audio file is shown as MAQ though it is not.

Now that I have sorted this out I can start to evaluate the audible differences and determine my preference ;)

Back in the end of 2012, Lumin launched the world first DSD-capable network music player, when DSD was not universally supported by all manufacturers, and not everyone believed in DSD (many still don't, including some manufacturers).

Now in 2017, Lumin released a free firmware upgrade to the same network music player that is in the market for more than 4.5 years (along with several newer models), making the world first network music players that can decode MQA via RAAT protocol or native OpenHome UPnP protocol, when MQA was not universally supported by all manufacturers, and not everyone believed in MQA (many don't, including some manufacturers), and not all network players support RAAT that is necessary for Roon.  Even fewer supported OpenHome.

The goal of Lumin is exceptionally simple, we make the best sounding feature rich network music players that are the most convenient to use.  The next big feature we hope to make is to support Spotify Connect.  (No estimate of when this will be available, but iOS users can already AirPlay from Spotify app to Lumin.)

(Note: At the time of this post, there are other manufacturers that support RAAT and MQA separately, but not when used together.)

Hi wklie,

A few weeks ago I had a chance to listen to the Brinkmann Nyquist. If I am not mistaken this player supports MQA over RAAT. Actually this player persuaded me to install ROON on my NAS.

Please core to me if I'm wrong..

Thanks for the info @A1B.  Roon Labs told me we're the first so I believed them, but there is a slight possibility they didn't know about another device achieving that.

The functionality of Roon sending MQA to a Roon Ready player (Roon Core + SDK) happened about a month ago:

https://community.roonlabs.com/t/mqa-for-dsj-and-ds-w-bridge-ii-is-imminent/28180/46

https://community.roonlabs.com/t/roon-1-3-build-242-is-live-devialet-air-now-streaming/28166

For MQA over RAAT to work, the player must have a firmware upgrade that integrates the latest SDK in the past 33 days.  Without such a firmware upgrade, either MQA cannot be decoded, or MQA is decoded but fails the timing requirements of Roon Ready players.  I tried to find such a firmware upgrade for the device you mentioned but I'm not able to find it.

Hi Peter,

Then you will be right. I didn't have MQA files available at the time so I have no hands-on experience. I read in the Brinkmann manual that the Nyquist supports ROON as a ROON ready player and that it supports full MQA decoding. Assuming that the two work together was a leap of thought on my account.

Hi Peter,

I have a totally different question for you. Recently I am having problems with my L1. I didn’t use the L1 for some time because I used a Qnap NAS with Roon. When I reconnected the L1 It took ages to load the library to my S1, actually it never fully loaded at all. Also some of the icons (Qobuz and Radio) did not appear.

To to determine the reason for this behavior moved all the music files from the L1 (I had some 1600 albums) and replaced the with a modest number of 300 albums. I never touched the system files.

The music files loaded nicely, but after many hours the album art of only  4 albums is visible. The music files play fine.

Can you please help me finding an explanation?

Hi Peter,

I tried everything you advised and more (removed the app and reinstalled it), but no luck.

The behavior isDAB3082F-2991-41AC-AB3B-3E90BEE6A6FF.thumb.png.b6cbd13414321a4f50d25c202e9078ec.png erratic. The cover of eleven albums of the total of 320 is visible in list view, but not always in the tiled viewer. The library from the Qnap loads artwork without a problem.

Also the app “hangs”  regularly. Is there a way to check/reinstall thr firmware of the L1?

Hi Peter,

i think my (our) problems must be related to the L1. My reasons for saying this is are twofold:

1.everything worked fine with my L1 until I reconnected the L1 after leaving it on the shelf for some time when I used the Qnap

2.the Qnap contains the very same files that are on the L1 and when I select Minimserver as my source everything is as it should be.

One other observation: When I reload the library on the Qnap I get a pop up screen showing the progress. When I reload the library on the L1 there is no such pop-up screen.

There seems to be no disk damage because the files are playing beautifully. I exclude WiFi issues as the culprit because both hard drives are wired to the same switch and I switch from one library to the other from the same iPad.

Kindest regards,

Ewan.

Hi Peter,

My working day had started, so I will perform the procedures you mentioned tonight.

Before I do so, I would like to have your guidance on the following:

I am using an Apple Macintosh as my desktop. If I want to reformat the L1, do I have to remove the Linux partition as well?

In the last couple of days I also tried to see if the settings for the L1 in the Lumïn App (remote access and UpnP settings) made any difference. Are these important in relation to my problems, and what settings should I use?

Regards,

Ewan.

Hi Peter,

I went through steps 1-9, nut the only option I get under the L1 tab is to remove the library. When I turn on remote access (the only other option available) I get the option to update.

is this behavior a tell tale of what’s the matter? And what choice should I make.

Kind regards,

Ewan.

Hi to you all,

Though I have been  absolutely satisfied with my S1 for two years is is time for me to upgrade. I have put my S1 up for sale together with my L1 library. If you’re interested., please look at my advertisement on hifi.nl.

But this is not the reason for my post. Because I have used and sBooster linear PSU to power my L1 for te latest year, I put the original PSU in a storage box where I have several 12 V PSU’s. As you will understand I want to supply the L1 that I am selling with the original PSU.

I can’t find any pictures of te original PSU on the internet. Can one of you please post a picture or a description of brand and model #?

Your help will be greatly appreciated and I would like to conclude with commending Lumïn for their excellent support and for their ongoing investment in keeping the Lumïn players up with the latest developments.

Kindest regards,

Ewan.
