Sammy Davis Jr

Recommended Posts

Seems to me that many of the recordings of Sammy Davis Jr, fall victim to that over-produced Vegas sound that was in vogue in the 60's and 70's. Which is a shame because I find there is a magical quality to his voice that lets it stand alone. It is so perfectly in tune, it seems to hit a resonant spot in the body that vibrates in harmony. I just received a copy of Sammy Davis Jr. Sings and Laurindo Almeida Plays. As the title says, it's just the two of them. This is a very special album; low key, intimate, well recorded and totally involving. Liner notes say mixed and mastered by Steve Hoffman, produced by Jimmy Bowen, recorded June 1966 at the United Recording Corporation of Nevada. Recording engineer Lowell Frank. This is even better than the Bill Evans, Tony Bennett collaborations. If anyone has recommendations for a single vocal/instrument combination album that is outstanding I would love to hear about them.
