Audiophile Style Podcast: Episode 24 | Volumio Interview

Episode 24 is up and being delivered to all the podcast platforms right now.

In this episode I interview Michelangelo from Volumio about his background, the beginnings of the software and hardware products, and the current Volumio offerings. I’ve used Volumio off and on over the years and really admire the progress this team has made with respect to both geeks and those with a passion for music without the geekiness. Volumio is now a product for people in either camp. Michelangelo also gives candid answers to questions about Volumio’s  subscription model, where the company is headed in the future, and the ten bonus questions. Enjoy :~)

Current Podcast Setup.jpgAs much as I'd love to deliver this show to everyone in lossless high resolution audio, the podcast platforms only accept MP3. So, I record everything as lossless WAV files using a Neumann TLM 103 transformerless cardioid condenser microphone, then convert to 320 Kbps MP3 to give everyone the best quality currently possible. Given that I'm using a Merging Technologies Anubis analog to digital converter to record, I technically could do everything at DXD (384 kHz) or DSD256, but that's a bit over the top, even for me.

A big thanks to David Chesky for allowing me to use the track East Harlem, from the album The Body Acoustic. The album can be purchased and downloaded at 24/96 from the Chesky Records site here

Dancing the line between subscription and free is really interesting and it seems like Volumio is working that issue well.  When I reviewed the Primo I found the overall system still a bit geeky.  I am going to fire up my Primo, update it and see where things are.!

@The Computer AudiophileThanks for another great podcast.

I setup my Primo and have tested it hooked up to the A2+ speakers and my Heavenly Soundworks 517 system, both using the analog outputs.   I did a quick software update and mounted my Synology NAS with my music.  The scan of 2.7tb of music seem a lot faster.  The overall UI performance feels a lot more responsive.  I will explore the software further over the next few weeks.  This is going to be fun.
