    iControl From Apple & A Cool Remote Buddy Update

    I have two pretty cool updates for those using an iPod Touch as a remote. The popularity of using an iPod Touch or iPhone as a remote control for music servers appears to have peaked Apple's interest. In addition there has been a really neat update to Remote Buddy that had me giddy last night. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

     

     

     

     

     

     

    <b>Apple Update</b>

     

    Several sites are reporting that Apple will be releasing a native iPhone application code-named iControl. The details are few and far between right now. The speculation says this application will allow you to stream music and videos to your iPod Touch from you library. The only hard fact is that Apple did apply for a patent that pretty much covers all areas of this technology. I know it's not much, but this info has me very interested!

     

     

     

    <b> Remote Buddy Update</b>

     

    IOSpirit recently released an update to its Remote Buddy software. The best feature, and one that clearly puts RB ahead of Signal, is the ability to stream content to your device. Right after I ran the update last night I was streaming music from my whole library to my iPod Touch. I am extremely happy I only went for the 8 GB Touch since I no longer have to sync my music to the unit. Now I essentially have a 5 TB iPod Touch! Streaming music is not quite as slick as playing local content, but it is by no means awkward. If you've been holding out for a remote control application now is the time to pull the trigger on Remote Buddy!

    First of all, setup the AJAX Remote as described in the FAQ entry "How do I setup the AJAX Remote?".

    Then follow these steps:

    1. In AJAX Remote on your iPod® Touch or iPhone™, tap on the "Music" symbol.?

    2. Now tap on "Library" (upper-right corner) and navigate to the media file you want to playback on your iPod® Touch or iPhone™.?

    3. Tap on the blue play button.?

    4. If QuickTime® thinks that it can playback the file, you can now start playback by tapping on dark-blue playback button.?

    All preference settings are already set correctly by default. If however, you don't see any playback symbols: the remote access to files is only supported if you have you have set a password ("Require password" is enabled) and the option "Allow access to the files in your iTunes® library ("streaming")" is enabled as well.

    As you know I am really interested in a remote interface that makes the concept of a high performance non-megabuck server attractive to new users. Unfortunately we are running into my "hey, I'm only an audio guy" limitations.<br />

    I don't understand what the advantage of streaming to the iTouch is. Obviously you don't need to get the actual music to the iTouch, so I assume it has to do with the iTouch functioning more like iTunes itself. I think my confusion applies to both of the new offerings. Can you give a 101 type version for the short bus crowd?<br />

    Hey Rick - There are two cool advantages to streaming to the iPod Touch. Both of which you may not even like, but I think they are pretty cool :-)<br />

    1. When I listen to my Touch at home I can use my whole library instead of only what is synchronized with the 8GB iPod Touch. I just stream the content right to the unit. I've been waiting for this functionality for some time. But, you may not even use an iPod at home. Since you have an ARC, Classe, Vandersteen system it would be hard to justify ever leaving the listening room :-)<br />

    2. Another option is to combine an iPod Touch with the new Wadia 170 iTransport which pulls the digital signal straight from the iPod. So, you can use the iPod as a wireless transport and still skip the internal DAC. Not the best sounding solution ever devised, but it is a viable option.<br />

    I will surely try both of these and probably only use the first option. I have a feeling you were looking for more functionality than this so you thought you were missing the point of this whole streaming business.

    Hey Chris, I go incognito for a few weeks and come back to find this great news. I'll have to check this out, but from the little bit I can put together from reading only the first few lines of text, this for use ONLY when listening to music on headphones thru the touch right?

    Hey SGB I've been wondering about you lately. I thought you got sick of us around here :-)<br />

    This new functionality in Remote Buddy is mainly for listening through headphones. But, this will work good in combination with the Wadia 170 iTransport as well.
