INSTALLATION: In the life of every audiophile there is a moment when wants more and better. After reading a few reviews, I decided to exchange the opams on my sound card to the Burson V6. But to the point. I ordered amplifiers directly from the manufacturer. Particularly noteworthy is the very professional and friendly service of the Burson company. The ordered amplifiers came to me packed in special boxes filled with special transport foam, protected with a sticker to prevent accidental opening and packaged in a bubble envelope. The size of the envelope has been correctly selected for the size of the items and properly secured for transport. Along with the amplifiers, cable ties are supplied to protect the installed amplifiers from accidental slipping out of the sockets. At least one DIP8 extension cable will be required for installation. My sound card is PowerColor Devil HDX which is similar to AIM SC808, except that Devil has a newer PCB and additional jumpers on the main card to configure the daughter card or front mic/headset sockets on the computer case. In addition, the drivers are in red as it befits the devil. Together with my colleague who owns Asus STXII, we did comparative tests of these cards and I must admit that I am very positively surprised. My Devil, on the background of Asus, presents very similar sound quality at half the price. The card has the ability to replace three operational amplifiers - two channel and headphone buffer. Unfortunately, the RCA buffer is soldered permanently. Please note that in order to install Burson V6 or V5 amplifiers, you must use at least one DIP8 extension due to the close location of the headphone buffer amplifier and right channel amplifier. Based on read reviews of the V6, I was torn and decided to mix up the Vivid and Classic versions. So I bought 4x V6 - 2x Vivid and 2x Classic. I decided to use two opamps as channels and one as a buffer. So I have to check two combinations of 2 + 1. After the warranty is finished, I intend to solder the DIP8 socket and install the fourth amplifier as an RCA buffer. Is it right to mix Classics and Vivid ?? I do not know. Opinions are divided, but I hope to dispel at least some of these doubts. The installation is quite simple and I think that every homegrown electronics or IT guy should deal with it if use right tools. I suggest to have an integrated circuit extractor for removing original amplifiers and a medium size Philips screwdriver. Using a screwdriver, we disassemble the sound card itself from the computer and then remove the EMI cover by unscrewing the four screws. Unfortunately, after installing the amplifiers due to their height, you will not be able to install the EMI shield. However, it should be mentioned that I did not noticed any interference to the operation of the sound card. I think the disruption is primarily due to the used low quality power supply and possibly the proximity of the graphics card. So remember, do not to save on the power supply. The next step is to extract originally or previously installed amplifiers. Remember to use the appropriate extractor and take special care to avoid breaking the amp's feet that may remain in the socket. A number of guides on how to remove integrated circuits from sockets can be found on YouTube. Now we are finally installing the much-desired Burson amplifiers. Amplifiers must be simply inserted into the sockets on the PCB of the sound card. In my case, I installed the channel amplifiers directly on the card and used the DIP8 extension lead to install the headphone buffer. As I mentioned earlier, direct installation of all 3 amplifiers on the card is impossible, i.e. the right channel amplifier or headphone buffer must be installed on the extension lead because the sockets of these amplifiers on the PCB are located quite close to each other. In the case of my card, the amplifiers sit so tightly in the sockets that there is no need to use the supplied safety bands. This is the installation on the PowerColor Devil HDX card. Difficult? I do not think so!! These are the remaining parts after the installation of Burson amplifiers. You can install your daughter's card of course but only if you purchase longer cables to connect to the main card. REVIEW: I am after a few weeks listening tests to the Bursons V6 and finally I can speak. The auditions were performed on the PowerColor Devil HDX sound card, the headphones AKG M220Pro and Sennheiser HD650; speakers Microlab Solo 7C and Microlab FC330. I will start with 2x V6 Vivid + 1x Classic. Vivid are amplifiers that play in great detail with high tones brought to the maximum in a positive sense. It is super cleanly, you can hear every smallest murmur of fingers on the strings or a dice on the strings of the guitar, each most gentle tap of the drumstick. The low and medium tones are very correct and there are exactly as many of them as needed. Bass can go pretty low and deep but only where it has to do, without going to other bands. It must be admitted that Vivid nicely interlaces all the bands, drawing from them the maximum and especially from the high tones. Everything is detailed and analytically pampered creating a little bit of a cold atmosphere. In Vivid, the sound stage is quite wide but very deep. The vocal is distant, set in a central point, as if getting out from behind the instruments. After converting to 2x Classic + 1x Vivid the situation changed equally slightly as well as diametrically. The details now are IMO about 5% smaller than Vivid. At the same time, this is accomplished by the fact that all these high tones are more subdued or smoothed. Nothing is less. All the decorations and others that I mentioned in the description of Vivid, come out from other instruments or you can hear them a little more quietly than the rest of the instruments, which makes them audible but they are not as obvious as in the case of Vivid. The bas and mid tones in my opinion are at the same great level as in the above. The biggest difference, however, can be seen in the scene and vocals. The stage is a little less deep and I think as wide as in Vivid. This different depth, however, causes that the music is served much nicer creating a specific atmosphere like a chamber concert played only for you. The vocal is now placed in the first row with the instruments or just in front of them. All these features of Classic make me feel like I'm listening to music on a tube amplifier from the top shelf that gives a slightly analog, warm and intimate sound. I do not want to interrupt this idyll at all... I think that both Classic and Vivid will find their recipients. Vivid will be the best choice for those who want to get the best detail and analytics, served cold, without any unnecessary emotions. Classic will please everyone who wants to let themselves be carried away by music, creating a specific atmosphere, without unnecessarily analyzing each and every musical piece separately and allowing to absorb music as a whole. I am in this case the second group. Classic give me enough quality, detail and analyticality and at the same time create a unique, amazing, warm, cozy and analog atmosphere. It should be remembered that technically analyzing both amplifiers are very close to each other with a very slight advantage of Vivid in high tones and, hence, in detail but slightly worse sound stage in my opinion. Also, you have to remember that on my headphone buffer there was always a V6 amplifier opposite to the one installed on the channels, and the weak LM4562NA on the RCA buffer was permanently soldered. All this can cause that in my listening sessions some discrepancies may occur in relation to the V6s of the same type used. In my situation, however, the best configuration is 2x Burson V6 Classic as channels + 1x Burson V6 Vivid as a headphone buffer !!
