TL;DR - $5-6k - New DAC, new Pre-Pro or a new Amp? (system's spec below, other thoughts are welcomed!) Hi guys, I had a bout of acute upgradeitis for the past few months which I've heroically resisted (*ahem*) until today when my UMC-200 faltered, surely a clear sign from the audio gods so who am I to argue? I thought to seek your opinion and thoughts about the direction of my next upgrade... Help would be highly appreciated The system at stake: HTPC --> JRiver/Roon --> Dirac Live --> HDMI --> Emotiva UMC-200 --> Emotiva XPA-5 Gen2 --> Quadral Platinum M50 (fronts) | | --> Quadral Platinum M10 (center) | | --> Morel SP-2 (surrounds) | --> JL-Audio E-Sub e112 | --> TV My priorities: Sound quality for Stereo audio content Video content on the same system PS4 connected to the same system with 5.1 supported MCH Audio content on the same system Special considerations: As most of the budget back then was directed to the speakers (except the surrounds) I thought about focusing on the electronics this round. I listen a lot to electronic music which generally favors a subwoofer for that 'club feel' so I normally upmix 2.0 to 2.1 in software and have the Sub channel go through Dirac room correction. Thus - I am limited by preference to multi-channel DACs/Pre-Pros. The journey so far with questions: I thought about going with the exaSound e38 (directly to the amp) which I've been eyeballing for a long long while. Then I learned that the e38 SPDIF inputs are only Stereo (Heavens why?!) and so that complicates things for priority #3 - getting the PS4 connected to the same system. I will probably be able to fix the UMC-200 and could connect the exaSound e38 to the UMC-200's analog 7.1 Input along with the PS4 (HDMI), but would it do it justice? I was looking at Parasound P7 as a "future-proof" pure analog 2x7.1 pre-amp option and connect the e38 + UMC-200 (or any future AV processor) to it. So, exaSound e38 + Terry Pardo LPS + Parasound P7 - What do you think? Other options to consider? e38 ($3849 inc. the Terry) + used P7 (~$1600 hopefully) is at the $5-6k budget mark. This is definitely on the 'higher than expected' spending wagon for me so I'm wondering if there are better ways to spend this money on this system. A higher-end 2 ch amp for the fronts? Save for better fronts? Drop the P7? Something else? Also - what is your take on this unfavorable review on the exaSound e32 by Amirm - Exasound E32 DAC Review and Measurements ? So this is where I stand today. Is there a doctor in the crowd? :-) Ron
