After a few months of reading Sonore’s forum articles on their new optical products, I decided to jump on the bandwagon by purchasing the opticalModule to be hooked up to my ultraRendu. I’ve read one of John Swenson’s post explaining clock phase noise and leakage currents. I liked John’s idea to start first purchasing the opticalModule and go for the opticalRendu afterwards, which was to me a reasonable and scalable approach. To hook everything up, I had to purchase a Trendnet TFC-GSFP Media Converter ($33/each), one 5m Furutech LAN-7 Ethernet cable ($275) a 1m fibre optic cable ($20) and two 5VDC Jamelco wallwart linear regulated PS ($11/each) to minimize PS leakage currents between the fiber connected equipment as per John Swenson’s recommendation. If I wouldn’t like the new setup, the financial risk was low (total of $600). My ultraRendu is hooked-up to a Uptone 1.2 PS. I hooked-up the gear and played some music. I was immediately blown away by the black background, increase in overall resolution and bass. The musical representation had greater dimensionality and musical instrument lines were easier to follow individually. In a nutshell, if you already own any previous rendu units, you should make the move to purchase the opticalModule, you will not regret it. So, after a few weeks of listening to my new opticalModule, I had another audiophile crisis and started wondering what my setup would sound like using the opticalRendu. Darn… had to order one and while at it, why not purchase the new Sonore Ultra PS? I received the opticalRendu and waiting for the Ultra PS to arrive. I am temporarily powering the opticalRendu with my HDPlex 400W linear PS. I’ve moved my Uptone 1.2 PS to the opticalModule replacing the Jameco PS. Well, the magic has operated once again! The audio quality gains of the opticalRendu in the full optical setup are the same as with the opticalModule, you’re just getting more of it! Now if money is scarce and looking for best bang for the buck, you could just start with the opticalModule as proposed by John Swenson and get a significant sound improvement. In my current setup, I would rate the opticalModule/opticalRendu combo as a 10/10 and the opticalModule/ultraRendu combo as a 7.5/10. Please note that I have not tested the opticalRendu with the Ultra PS yet. There could some additional gains coming my way, with the new Sonore PS connected to my opticalRendu. I will keep the forum posted, once I receive the Ultra PS.
