Cheap Computer Recording

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm hoping someone can help me or point me in the right direction. I'm looking for inexpensive recording hardware.

I do most of the AV stuff at my church and it was recently brought to my attention that the MP3 recordings of the sermons are very poor quality. I never actually listen to any of the recordings until now and i would agree, they are horrible. A majority of the problem is the hissing/whining sound that i assume is from using the onboard line in jack on the computer. We had a AV company come in and do all the wiring, speakers, amps, and mixer so I don't think it would be any of that equipment. The sound is great inside the church and on the personal listening devices we have, which again brings me back to the sound card.

after some research i learned that it might be best to use an external sound card to eliminate that hissing sound. do you think i can get away with a $20 cassette to mp3 type converter or should i spend the $100-$150 to get a decent external interface?

I'd check out the Behringer UCA202 device...

...in my opinion / experience...

While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing.

And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism.

keep your mind open... But mind your brain doesn't fall out.

The Behringer. Around US$ 30, I believe.

If you need something with balanced inputs, the Roland UA25-EX has two of those and is very good. Around US$ 150. I use this myself for all kinds or recordings, also with phantom-powered mics.

I really appreciate your input. I was doing some browsing on the internet while i was waiting for a reply and i stumbled upon this Behringer audio interface and looked at some reviews. I was just about to head out the door and off to best buy when i refreshed and saw your posts. sure enough they had this over there and i picked it up with some different audio cables to go to the mixer, total was $45. I went to the church and spent about 10 minutes putting it in and playing with some audio levels. its all finish and everything sounds great. its just what i was looking for. thanks again
