firewire 400 overheating problems

Recommended Posts

I'm new in this foro.

Maybe this is not the correct side, my question has nothing to do with remote. But taken advantage that you are using a mac mini (2011 or 2010?) I wish you to ask a question: do you have problems with using firewire interface? I mean that in my macbook, when i connect my dac ear master one via firewire 400 to macbook, starts overheating and fan is increasing up to 3000 rpm.

I would like to know if mac mini with i5 intel should have this minor problem or not and this is why I ask you.

Sorry for my English, I'm from Spain and I live in Marbella, Málaga.

My sistem is:

- dac: ear master one, from acoustic reality (http://arhifi.dk/store/)

- macbook and pc with xp, optimized: some times i use mac and others pc (I prefer mac, to be honest)

- turntable: clearaudio emotion

- Quad active speakers, model 11: much, much, much better than "any" pasive speakers and saves items and space.

Hello Javier -

When the fans spin up have you tried looking at Activity Monitor which can be found in the Utilities folder. Be sure to set the drop down box at the top right for "All Processes" to bring back all the activity on your Mac. Look for anything that mistaking up a lot of CPU power. Activity Monitor itself will spike every once and a while but this is not the problem.

Do you happen to have Parallels on your Mac with Windows apps set to show in the doc? There is a bug in one of the versions of Parallels that can cause high CPU usage. Did your DAC require the installation of any drivers to operate on the Mac side? Also, which version of the OS are you currently running.

Let's see if we can see what processes are at play when the fans spin up and you are connected to the DAC.

English:

I have a new i7 Mac Mini with an OWC SSD I installed and the only time the fan spins up is when I use HandBreak for video conversions. Very quiet at all other times. Also, I have a new i5 Air which I like very much. Great machines either way and pleantly of power for a music server.

Hope the Google Translator worked OK.

Thanks for the answer.

I have snow leopard and fan spins up only and when i connect the firewire device. i don't have windows on mac.

"idle" is almost always at 95%, with or without firewire dac connected.

I use audirvana and decibel; very good this one, because leaves my dac to play files up to 192Khz.

I don't know how to make a "photo" to activity monitor screen.

To take a screen shot

1. Press Shift-Command-4 at the same time. You will now get a target like icon.

2. Place cursor over the Activity Monitor Window till it kind of highlights it.

3. Press space bar and a new PNG file will show up on your desktop.

You may have to scroll down after the 1st "window shot" to get the additional contents of the window.
