CamperKev
Hi, I am hoping somebody could help me. I am new to computer audio but have a poor understanding of computers. I recently built a music server and have been trying to optimize windows 7. Trying to determine which services I could disable, I was in windows task manager with JRiver playing an album and noticed about every minute one cpu core would jump to 100% usage for a couple of seconds and then drop down from service interrupts. After researching service interrupts on the internet, I traced it to my v-link.For the past week I have spent countless hours trying to solve this but have been unsuccessful. Is this how a v-link normally functions? Link to comment
autoformer
I use a V-Link with Apple MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini and have never seen this behavior before. I don't want to step into the religious wars around operating systems, but I switched from Windows to OSX about 10 years ago and since then much, much, much less of my life is wasted fixing computers. And by the way, I'm an ex-Microsoft guy! Link to comment
Mark Powell
I have just tested with Task Manager for 15 minutes. Windows 7 Home Premium, JRiver output mode WASAPI Event Style, V-Link on a 4Gb Intel Core i3 laptop. Processor averages around 7% with the occasional jump to max 18%. Looking at the charts there are instantaneous spikes up to 70% now and again. Core 1 is slightly higher than the others. Nothing is disabled and the figures are much the same, including the spikes, when the V-Link is removed so the output goes to the internal Realtek sound card. It is only 2 or 3% lower when JRivers is not running at all. So my V-Link does not cause any anomalies. Link to comment
CamperKev
Thanks. I am relieved that this is normal with windows 7. My music server had only been installed in my system for a couple of weeks and I hadn't gotten around to purchasing a ups, when I came home from work the other day I was greeted to flashing clocks and cooked internet router power supply. The sales woman that sold me a new power supply said the power had been flickering all morning. I hadn't been sure if I missed a setting or had changed something in my fumbling through windows, but have really been worried that either the v-link or server had been damaged. I built my server with an Intel Pentium G620T, so it isn't a real powerhouse. Seeing that one core on your i3 would spike to 70% it occurred to me that I could plug the v-link into my main computer to see what type of cpu usage I would have. The spikes never broke 25% on a single core but were not sustained. I installed the v-link back into my system and out of curiosity installed service pack 1 and every available update (I am unsure if this is good or bad). I again checked my usage in performance monitor. I still saw one core with 100% usage spike but it was not sustained and timed them to almost 2 minute intervals. Anyway I appreciate that you took some time out of your day to help me. Thank-you. Link to comment
