BacHolz
Another fantastic album from Tzadik label. John Zorn - The Gnostic Preludes. Thanks for this. La Voce del Violoncello Solo works of the first Italian Cellist Composers Both recordings feature Elinor Frey playing historic instruments and the "La Voce" contains some of the earliest compositions of Italian cello concerti by lesser knowns as Supriani, Dall'Abacp, Vitali, Ruvo, et al. BacHolz
I would like to introduce myself to this Thread with this excellent play of this romantic and very russian Concerto for violin and orchestra in D Major Op. 35 from Tschaikovski. Wow, it is played with so much passion and tempo by Susanna Yoko Henkel and the Duisburger Philharmonic by Jonathan Darlington. It made me forget that time was passing by. I can also recommend you to watch her playing this concerto on you tube. A skilled violist and charming performance by her and the Orchestra. 5 Stars :-) for me, highly recommended. It is available at hiresaudio com [24-192]. Welcome and thanks for this "romantic and very Russian Concerto". BacHolz
Earliest Italian cello concerti vs one of the last great works for viola da gamba. Very interesting. Thanks. And organum for this evening: Leonin: Sacred Music from 12th-century Paris - 2 Red Byrd Your welcome and yes, as an afterthought, I considered editing my post to clarify the matter of cello vs viola da gamba. In this age of an extremely overworked classical repertoire, releases can distinguish themselves in limited ways. The tried and true approach of an a unique and personal interpretation matched with a command of both the instrument the score presented in sonic excellence. Then there are those recordings that distinguish themselves for their novel programming of rarely recorded or largely unknown works presented in a compilation that shares a common theme, uniquely offered or revealing a special moment of music history. This are the ones that I most enjoy discovering. BacHolz
A simply beautiful recording of Hildegard von Bingen: The same ensemble did a recording of the - apparently - first female composer in the Western World: Both are available as downloads from eg. Qobuz. Interesting, with the dissolution of Anonymous 4, this ensemble, new to me, appear to be the heir apparent of the all female, early music artists. Thank you... BacHolz
Same here. Album of Sunday afternoon: La Voce del Violoncello Elinor Frey, Esteban la Rotta, Susie Napper A mix of early Italian solo cello works. A few of the pieces have bass accompaniment, but most are played as solo. The Dall'Abaco capricci are very Bach like. Wonder if there is any complete recording of the whole set. Yes, an excellent collection which i got along with the aforementioned "Berlin Sonatas". I wish she recorded more. As to Dall'Abaco, all that I have of his is on this disc (an issue soon to be remedied). I found this for us I just discovered some confusion. I used dbpoweramp to rip my copy and it used a source which identified Dall'Abaco as Evaristo Felice but should it have been Joseph Marie Clément Ferdinand dall'Abaco? I don't have easy access to the disc. Correction - the disc above is the wrong composer and dbpower was right on with Evaristo Felice Dall'Abaco, 1675-1742. BacHolz
As for dall'Abaco, the CD back cover says Giuseppe Maria Dall'Abaco, which is essentially the same as Joseph Marie. Album of the evening: Gottfried Finger: Complete music for viola da gamba solo Petr Wagner, Ensemble Tourbillon The title is quite misleading. Only one of the pieces here is true solo. The rest serious continuo accompaniment. Turns out the solo here refers to one main viol, as oppose to a dual. Nice music, but not very distinctive. As to the Dall'Abaco confusion I wandered into, Wikipedia resolves the matter. "Joseph Abaco (full name Joseph (Giuseppe) Marie Clément Ferdinand dall'Abaco) (27 March 1710 – 31 August 1805) was an Italian violoncellist and composer. He was born and baptised in Brussels, Belgium on 27 March 1710, and was musically trained by his father, Evaristo Felice dall'Abaco.[1] As to Evaristo, I'll be listening to this tomorrow. BacHolz
A long time favorite of mine also. Hard yo pick a favorite and I noticed a recent release that is new to me. First listen is a little jarring... Nouveau flamenco to which he has added a reggae beat on some tracks. Not necessarily a bad thing but sometimes fusion efforts can get lost in "innovation". BacHolz
This is an amazing album! Thanks once more! Can you recommend some other musicians from this part of the world.? This artist was new to me and thanks for the awakening. Not a strength in my library but I've enjoyed Azam Ali, both solo and with a group called Niyaz. I don't know how "authentic" these artists are. With that qualifier, I can suggest "Elysium for the Brave" and "Nine Heavens" (a two disc release) for your consideration from my modest collection. BacHolz
Thanks! An interesting recommendation. p.s.: I wish she and her ensemble would unplug! Just my taste. Mine as well and for my taste, I don't feel that Ali and Niyaz have strayed 'too' far from their roots. Those with a richer understanding of the music's history may, of course, disagree. "Nine Heavens" is a two disc release, one disc is acoustic and the other disc presents much of the same material with "electronic" enhancement. Thanks for the tip on "From Night To The Edge Of Day". BacHolz
As a self confessed "Goldbergian" with numerous recordings, I have duplicates with the same artist but once. This is of course the notable recordings by Glenn Gould. Has any one listened to Angela Hewitt's return to this work? I'm interested and have only postpone purchase because of some more pressing priorities. Resistance is futile! BacHolz
I have her 1999 recording and quite like t but don't listen to it often. I'm really curious about her new release. The snippets on Hyperion's website sound quite tempting. Too bad they don't allow streaming at all. I must admit these days not being able so stream an album becomes a hurdle for me to buying it, especially on works like the Goldbergs where I already own dozens. The rather particular recent Esfahani recording was just reviewed by Classica by the way and got 2 out of 5 stars, their way of saying they really don't like it, calling it "post-baroque". My take is much the same and I'm a little surprised that her marketing managers didn't create a medium to generate interest among those on the fence about owning her revisit to this masterwork. I'm sure I'll own it soon when other recordings of interest are few. Resistance is futile and she's an artist I have long admired. Later listening to include Madeleine Peyroux - Secular Hymns First impressions are favorable but I still seem to enjoy her earlier work like " Half The Perfect World" and "Careless Love" more than her later works. I remember how much I enjoyed discovering these albums a decade ago . BacHolz
Thanks for the pointer. I have her 1999 version, which is just ok. So I'm curious to hear this new one. Unfortunately, not fan of Glenn Gould :-) Glad to share. I respect the opinion of those who saw genius in Gould and I found many of his interviews with CBC fascinating. I "discovered" him in ~1980 with the release of his second take on the Goldbergs which had been dragged from the dusty shelf of history with his 1955 recording. Often too aggressive for my taste and at times not exploring the dynamic range of a variation, what I found most objectionable are his vocalizations which the recording engineers could never fully address. BacHolz
In an interview in March 2008, it is said that the only major piano piece Brendel regrets never having performed is Bach's "Goldberg" Variations. BacHolz
For me this is one of his best late studio albums! Some songs' lyrics are a little hermethic (references to his buddhist training experiences, which I don't mind) but if you can digest it, you surely will appreciate this (musically supervised by Sharon Robinson) beautiful album!
