itunes not remembering my ipad & remote problem--help!

Any help appreciated!

itunes on my mac-mini has somehow forgotten my ipad/remote.

Meaning that when I turn on the mac-mini, I have to go through the "add new library/enter in the 4 digit code" process every time I want to listen to music.

Then, when I want to change to another album, it again doesn't remember my ipad/remote.

In the left-hand side of itunes, in the "library" column, I don't have a "devices" section listed, which I think I should?

My "devices" list in system preferences doesn't have my ipad in there & I can't see a way of adding it.

OK call me a numpty by all means, I'm still a fairly new convert to Apple stuff.

I have updated my itunes to the latest version but that hasn't helped.

So what am I doing wrong?
